Can you put a freestanding cooker under a worktop?

Just that really. I want a 100cm wide range oven but can't find a built-in or built-under one. Would it be mad to get a freestanding range cooker with an induction hob and put it under the worktop? On its minimum leg measurement, it would fit. Kitchen style is a bit vintage-y and "organic" (ie ramshackle) so a perfect finish isn't necessary. But is this a weird idea? Can't see anything anywhere where someone has done this.

So you won’t be able to use the induction hob?

Yes that does sound a bit mad

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 05/12/2023 14:50

So you wouldn’t use the hob?

Yobans · 05/12/2023 14:57

I don’t think it would work as they have vents at the back and they get hot even with just the oven on.

bananabug · 05/12/2023 15:01

Hot air blows out the top of the cooker and there is a minimum height for anything placed above it. Major fire risk to put it underneath a worktop! Just get a kitchen unit designed to house an oven.

bananabug · 05/12/2023 15:03

Or you could cut a gap in your worktop! We cut our worktop with a hacksaw to fit our fridge freezer in! Or if you want a better finish then pay a carpenter to do it.

BorgQueen · 05/12/2023 15:03

Cut the worktop out and add metal heatproof finishing strips to the raw edges. What’s under the worktop now?

wildery · 05/12/2023 15:21

Hmm, did wonder if it was mad. Currently have a single under-counter oven but would like a wider one, 90cm+ which people don't make. Or rather some (Smeg) do, but it's just one big single oven which I don't want.

We have a separate induction hob elsewhere, so above it would just be the run of worktop. It would fit underneath so no need to cut worktop, but appreciate the fire risk! But how is a freestanding oven any different to a built-in or built-under in terms of fire risk?

Built in ovens vent from the front as far as I’m aware, you get a draft of air as you walk past. Our Range vents at the back.

wildery · 05/12/2023 16:08

OK, thanks all for input. Seems there's a reason I can't find examples of anyone having done this! Wish there was more choice of built-in ovens though.

Could you have 2 50cm built in ovens side by side?

I've just looked on ao.com for exactly this reason. I don't think they exist. The width brackets are 55cm +. First one I clicked on was 59cm wide.

titchy · 05/12/2023 18:07

Can't you just have the range cooker and use the hob?

wildery · 05/12/2023 18:40

This might be the answer, thanks. Not ideal though!

That was in reply to @Scampuss

I can’t believe there isn’t more call for built-in range style ovens or wider built-in ovens. This is my perfect one (if prob too expensive) but it’s discontinued: https://www.ruislipappliances.com/products/D900WE3-SS.htm

Can’t find anything similar anywhere

Thanks so much for letting me know, but that’s 90cm high, not wide. Misleading, I know!
