Our old house was a 3 bed detached and was 900 square feet , when it was just my wife and I it felt ok size wise , eventually though it felt to small especially after my daughter came along.

we have to a 4 bed detached which is approx 1900 square feet , for first 12-18 months it felt massive and often a few rooms were empty while we bought more funiture and things etc.

I am now at a point where I think the house is starting to feel small. It’s the 3 of us and a cat. It doesn’t feel small all the time just every now and then. When I think rationally I know it’s silly. While there are tons of much bigger houses out there I often wonder if over time do all houses start to feel smaller after a while?

empty while we bought more funiture and things etc.

^ and this is the reason. You tend to fill the space you are in, so it does feel less roomy after a while.

1900 sq feet is a BIG house.
Time to become a minimalist maybe?

I think it can do...

When we moved in we essentially had an entire spare floor... And 4 bedrooms we never used and I remember thinking dear god why did we buy so much house??? Now I am glad for it

We are now about to become a family of 4 (our house is 2100 ish sq ft 5 bed) and I feel it is JUST the right size but sometimes wish I had bonus space... 😬😬😬

It seems insane when written but we need two offices and use one bedroom as a playroom or to keep the downstairs child free (ish)

Yes, ours felt big compared to our old house and now feels quite small. I think it is a combination of more stuff and bigger children! It reminds me of the 'A Squash and a Squeeze' book.

Bigger children makes a big difference. Everything associated with them increases in size, shoes, coats, clothes, friends, food required ...

You remind me of when we got fitted wardrobes in our bedroom. 11 doors of double hanging, 12 drawers, so much empty space. Of course, they are now bursting at the seams.

Yes It sounds normal from the replies. Bit like money , when wages go up and you have extra money left over you always find ways to use it and then suddenly that becomes a normal amount vs extra.

I often think as a reality check if I were to picture myself back at old house how would I manage. Also when at friends houses they seem to get my fine and they have more kids and smaller house.
