Painting over Navy walls

Hi all, well I am experiencing what many people who bought into the Navy walls trend will eventually face - how do I paint over them with light colours? I still love the navy walls but one of my rooms is being reconfigured, and I want it all to match in. I would like to do this myself - we will be getting painters in next Summer, when we redo our kitchen, so I cannot afford to get them in now only to have them back again.

If anyone is a professional decorator or experienced DIY painter, please let me know your tips.

Thank you.

We just planted over ours with a lighter colour! 2 coats of dulux and all is fine!

Painted, we plant anything!

We've inherited dark colours in property,we bought a special colour block paint, white very thick sorry I cannot remember the name. My youngest DD made a "design" on her bedroom wall with a black marker, used it on that as well.

I recently did my sons navy walk to very pale blue. It took 3 coats of Dulux emulsion, all good now

Valspar have a grey primer for this. Not used it myself but saw it as an before/after example in store

You could get some cheap, white paint and do a few coats of that. I do this so as not to waste a more expensive paint.

Dulux one coat aka Once is pretty good at obscuring dark colours, though you will probably need to do it twice.

Thank you all. This is so reassuring. I’ll get started next week.

It took four coats to get the black ceiling in my daughters bedroom completely white again once she had left home, but I'm sure you would get away with three coats if you use a really good quality paint. You would never know the ceiling hadn't always been white now.

It shouldn't be too difficult. I turned bright red to light grey by just doing a primer undercoat and then a couple layers of top coat and it came out fine. The dulux top coat was great, covered really well.
