Would you be happy with a garden facing this direction? This is with back against house in back garden.

South facing ? Yes I would be very happy with that. You will get most sun with this aspect than with any other

SupermarketMum · 24/11/2023 16:52

Mine is similar to that, maybe slightly more east facing. It’s great and gets lots and lots of sun

DuesToTheDirt · 24/11/2023 16:53

Yes, why wouldn't you?

wintericestorm · 24/11/2023 16:58

No, mine is South facing, the garden is like a sauna in the garden, hardly any to no shade at all, and is unbearable, we will never buy South facing again.

Amberlady · 24/11/2023 17:04

It depends what you like. I'd want some shade, but you can create that to a degree if it doesn't already exist. What else is around the garden. Trees, neighbouring buildings etc, that might cast shade? Orientation can be a bit of a red herring as it only gives you part of the picture.

Hyperion100 · 24/11/2023 17:04

You'll need plenty of shade in the summer months but theres a reason they are sought after.

GasPanic · 24/11/2023 17:07

Most people seem to want rear wall of house south facing in gardens. It is good for solar panels too if your roof faces that way.

It can be brutally hot in summer though if you have a lot of glass out the back.

And often gardens that do face south can be shadowed by buildings and trees.

So a long north facing garden without shadow can be much more sunny than a short south facing one with shadow.

Basically, there is more to it than what direction it faces. There are shadow analysis tools online.

Agree with this especially now with increased summer temperatures and if you have a house with a lot of glass, absolutely unbearable.

Yes

Makemydaypunk · 24/11/2023 17:08

Great post @GasPanic

SaintJuliette · 24/11/2023 18:16

Ours is similar orientation to that.

We get a lot of sun all day (or would, if we didn’t have so many trees). By the early evening, the sun vanishes behind neighbouring houses which is a bit of a shame, but that’s nothing to do with the orientation, and everything to do with what’s been built in the way.

PPs are right that the back of the house does get completely baked in high summer; it’s not good for paintwork, or for extensions or lift conversions with a lot of glazing. I tend to pull the curtains closed on the sunniest days.

Lots of other factors though - type of house (on hot days ours is cooler indoors than out), trees, slopes, surrounding buildings, area of the country (increased summer temperatures not much in evidence where I live!), etc.

sixteenfurryfeet · 24/11/2023 18:20

Yes, that would be fine. You will get some shade in summer in the mid-late afternoons when it is really hot, and will get the best available light in winter. The garden will also be sheltered from high winds which usually come from the SW. Assuming you are in the UK of course.

Your front garden will be in shade for about 6 months of the year though.

Whataretalkingabout · 24/11/2023 21:17

South facing is the best orientation for maximum lighting and warmth. Unless you live in Greece or Southern Spain the unbearable heat will be quite relative!

Mumaway · 24/11/2023 22:02

That's ideal in my opinion, as long as there's not a conservatory on the back of the house.

Seaitoverthere · 25/11/2023 07:45

It’s an absolute no for me as too much sun and with the summers getting hotter it is my idea of hell but plenty of other people seem to like south facing gardens.
