Help with plug for Tiffany lamp (3 round pins)

Rufffles · 24/11/2023 13:39

I have a gorgeous Tiffany table lamp that was bought for me as a gift. The plug attached to it is small, with three round pins (one fatter than the others). I've never seen one like it before (I'm in the UK). It came with an adapter to enable it to fit into a standard UK household plug socket.

About a month ago I was messing around with it and have somehow managed to damage either the plug or the adapter or both. I now can't get the plug into the adapter (the adapter still fits into the wall socket).

For love nor money I cannot find another adapter of this type online. I'm thinking maybe I just need to replace the plug instead. Or try a different solution.

Does anyone have any bright (no pun intended) ideas please? I love the lamp, and would like to get it back in working order before the gloomiest months of the year!

Photos attached...

Thanks a million in advance!

Cut the plug of and rewire to a UK standard plug which are from 99p at Screwfix. Use the 2 Amp fuse though rather than the 13 Amp that plugs come with.

Looks like a 3 pin European plug and you could get an adaptor from places that sell travel supplies.
But it's safer to properly rewire it to a UK plug so there is just one point of connection between lamp and wall.
As poster above said, use the 2amp fuse that's in the original plug

As others have said - get a new UK plug from Robert Dyas, B&Q/ other DIY shop, snip the wire and then wire it up. I'm sure there are videos on youtube that show you how to do it if you dont know how (we were shown how to do it at school in the 1990s as part of our general studies lessons in the sixth form but not sure how common that was)

It’s currently got a lamp plug
It’s designed for sockets which are controlled from light switches on the wall, so you can turn lamps on without having to bend down

it will be 5 or 3 amps but is fine to rewire into a standard plug

Thanks everyone!

@Towerofsong it's definitely not a European plug - the pins are two different sizes and much closer together than that.

I'm sure l'll get it sorted with the advice here. Thank you all again!

That is an old fashioned 2 amp plug, had them in student accommodation years ago.

Get an ordinary modern plug, replace the fuse with a two amp one. Remove the old plug and fit the new one. That way your art deco lamp will be protected and useable.

That's a South African plug I think (or at least, the same as we use in SA). You can buy a South Africa to UK adaptor - I still have my old South African plug on my slow cooker. Like this

having said that, as far as I can recall, if you are the type who can change a plug, you can do it easily when converting SA plugs to UK or vice versa.

@tenbob is right- it’s a lamp plug. We have several and means the lamps can be controlled from a wall switch. Our house has lamp sockets for them.

Thank you! I've removed the old plug, and fitted a 'normal' UK 3-pin plug. I've gone with a 3A fuse. Do you think I should be concerned about the fact it used to have a 2A and now has a 3A? It is working fine but perhaps I wont know it's unhappy until the house burns down?!

3A fuse is fine.

That plug is a BS546 which is the old (pre-WWII) British standard. It's stayed in use for lamps because it means you can have these sockets on a lighting circuit (controlled from a light switch) without risking the possibility that someone will plug in an electric kettle or heater into them and over load the circuit. Not much use if you don't have these sockets in your house though.

Thank you very much. Incredibly helpful and reassuring!
