New carpet - is this acceptable?

We had new carpet fitted to the living room, stairs and landing a few weeks ago.

We got the fitters back as we weren't happy with the fitting of the stair carpet. Initially it looked better after they refitted it, but within a couple of days the issue recurred.

Basically, the carpet is very wrinkled in places. It's really noticeable although doesn't show up very well in photos but hopefully you can see what I'm talking about. It's like vertical wrinkling, mostly towards the middle of the treads. It shouldn't be like that should it?

We're torn between not wanting to make a fuss and have yet more disruption if they come back out again, but also wanting the carpet to look like a newly fitted carpet rather than something old and baggy!

My DH says he's never seen stair carpet look like this, but I can't say I've paid much attention to other people's stairs! Does this look acceptable to you?

Unacceptable. Your DH is right. They need to fix that. I laid my own runner on my stairs in my old house and would never have left it loose like that. It's not safe.

Make them do it again

Grumpynan · 23/11/2023 16:50

They’ve put the grippers to close to the back of the step so it’s not pushing in tight enough. It will work more and more loose unless they move the gripper

ScaredSceptic · 23/11/2023 17:07

Thank you for the reassurance that we're not just being fussy, I will get them to come back out again.

I don't think they replaced the grippers @Grumpynan just used what was already there. Our previous carpet was fine, but it was cheaper, thinner and the underlay was thinner, so maybe that would make a difference and they need to change/move the grippers.

It's a stair carpet gany ridges or lumpy bits pose a potential hazard - it needs putting right immediately unless they fancy a claim for an accident caused by their shoddy workmanship!

Thank you. It doesn't seem to pose a hazard at the moment as the wrinkles run up the stairs rather than across them, but if it gets worse it could become a hazard.

It's especially annoying as we purposefully went with a local firm who train and employ their own fitters, thinking we would get a better service than the chains where the fitters are all self employed and you pay them separately.

The old carpet was cheap as chips from Frank's factory flooring (all I could afford when I first bought the house) but it was fitted much better than this!

That is really awful, definitely needs to be fixed free of charge.

Bluevelvetsofa · 23/11/2023 19:12

We had a new stair carpet a couple of months ago. It’s very far removed from what you’ve been left with. I think they need to start again and stretch it properly.

Just wanted to update this and say thanks to all of you for confirming this didn't look right.

I contacted the retailer again and they sent one of their very experienced staff out who noticed that the texture of the carpet was different in the wrinkled areas and also noticed other oddities with it.

The manufacturers have now agreed that there's a manufacturing fault with the entire carpet, not just on the stairs, and it's all being replaced in January. Which is great, although I'm not looking forward to going through the upheaval again!

Thanks for the update.

I hope the posters who blamed the fitters are now feeling ashamed.

ScaredSceptic · 21/12/2023 23:23

Not sure anyone needs to feel ashamed. It does look like a badly fitted carpet - we thought that was the problem ourselves to start with.

Why not? Why did no one think "manufacturing fault"?

Because its always easier to blame the poor bloody tradesmen.

ScaredSceptic · 22/12/2023 00:10

Because I'm not an expert on carpets, and it looked like it hadn't been stretched properly.

However I didn't "blame" anyone. I simply asked them to come back and look at it.

So get off your high horse.

A paid carpet professional should have been able to identify the issue in the first place.

Copperoliverbear · 22/12/2023 01:30

Is it park lane from carpet right, it looks the same as my carpet.
Maybe try to push it onto the gripper on each step maybe it's not gripping properly. X
