How do you paint a staircase with a house full of people?

Our staircase is in desperate need of painting, but we have no downstairs bathroom and there is never a point when enough people are out/away for me to get it done. We have a small house and its a main thoroughfare.

I did start and every single person managed to walk on the wet/drying paint.

I also started the half-technique painting one side of a step.

Arguably my family are daft, but I need to get this job done. How do people manage it short of working through the night?

I feel your pain…..when my 3 were all at home….my DP decorated the hall stairs and landing up 2 flights of stairs over a 3 week period….he did it weekends and evenings…..the kids were roared at by him every day for touching paintwork 🙄…,they are 25, 29 and 32 and still talk ( laugh) about it now…… it was very stressful…..the last time we redecorated was a breeze….my DP was at home for 10 days ( full pay but having to isolate because of covid contact ) ….and the kids were all living away from home …..so this time round it was only the dog that got roared at…. We had 5 smokers next door for years and I never thought of repainting to seal off the smell. They have gone now, but I am thinking if i get the stairs done, next job would be to paint under stairs cupboard. (Adds to never-to-be-done list)
