What's reasonable to put up with from neighbours building work??

I get on fairly well with my next-door neighbours, but at present I just want to explode.

I have so far had:

Drilling at 6.45am
Builders bursting into song and swearing when I've been wfh and this has been heard on calls.
A hole drilled into my wall.
Plastering at 10pm.
I'm currently in bed listening to sanding and further plastering of a wall.

I am ready to explode.

It's 22:16pm and they're fucking Plastering.

The walls are now incredibly thin from their side and I can hear absolutely everything.

Please tell me how I can handle this delicately without screaming at them???

Have you tried speaking to them at all?
I would mention that you hope they are fitting some sort of soundproofing as you are hearing increased noise since work started.

First, tell them you can hear all the noise. they may not realise.

Second, ask if they can install soundproofing at the same time as the rest of the work.

working hours should be 8am-4pm or 9am-5pm and that's all.

Fraaahnces · 20/11/2023 22:20

That’s too much. Check your council guidelines and print them out. Take the printout to your neighbour, knock on the door and hand it to them. Let them know that they seem to be oblivious to the council noise regulations, so you printed this out so that there is no further confusion.

CormorantStrikesBack · 20/11/2023 22:22

I’m in a similar position and talked to the council who have instructed my neighbour no work after 6pm, no work on a Sunday, no work after midday on a Saturday and nothing before I think 8am. My neighbour is actually building (but doing it himself) rather than internal DIY so the council made it a condition of his planning permission. But it was the environmental health nuisance team who took it seriously not planning dept initially.

Did they warn you in advance? that would have been thoughtful!

They may have no idea how much noise you can hear, so it's fine to let them know

Asking for loud singing and swearing to be kept down is fine, although they don't have to be silent just because you work from home

Although there are no specific times for allowing any work, there are time limitations for noisy activities; link below so you can quote this

hertstools.co.uk/what-time-can-building-work-start-in-a-residential-area/#:~:text=This%20act%20limits%20noisy%20work,6pm%20from%20Monday%20to%20Friday.

How long is it due to last? Hopefully not much longer!

FourNonBlondez · 20/11/2023 22:28

Its due to last about three months.
They told me about it and I was initially ok about it as they said they'd be respectful, but tonight I really feel they are taking the utter piss.

I've told them how audible all the noise is from their home and have now asked if they have any intention to install any soundproofing..

I've text them to ask them to stop. I'm one second away from shouting through the wall!!

Who's doing the work so late at night though - presumably not the builders?!

The link that @jackstini shared is correct but those restrictions and time limits only apply to professional workers. Residential DIYers have different rules and restrictions.

My last set of neighbours were annoying asshats who liked to drill at 6.45am on a Saturday morning. Apparently there's no actual law about when work can start and when it should finish, and it seems that every area has its own guidelines on what they think is reasonable. I've seen several sets of guidelines that say loud work should be confined to 9am to 6.30pm, but the ones for the authority area where I used to live advised loud work was acceptable from 7am to 11pm!!

FourNonBlondez · 21/11/2023 10:56

It is the neighbours that are doing the work. They've informed me there is no plaster on the wall and that they will be no sound proofing! honestly, is it so much to ask for work to conclude at 9.00pm!

Why would they want to soundproof if they have no concerns about noise ?

invest in some noise cancelling headphones till the building work is finished.

BlueMongoose · 21/11/2023 20:09

Sounds like a call to the council is in order if they're being obstructive about it.
