Painters cost - hallway/landing

Est1990 · 19/11/2023 21:34

I just got a quote for painting walls and ceilings (no woodwork) of hallway and landing of a 3 bed semi. They are newly plastered so literally minimal to none prep work...£1250 labour only😭😱

I'm not even sure I have the courage to ask for other quotes🤣
(We are painting the rest of the house but feel a bit afraid of falling down the stairs as we dont have proper equipment, that's why i asked for a quote).

Sorry! Just needed to vent

Also 3 bed semi but including woodwork and a sideboard, recently paid £850, took 4.5 ish days. NW

Cocoalover · 19/11/2023 22:22

I'm getting woodwork done soon, and am I paying 2.800 for all new skirting in the living room (it's a large room) and the landing upstairs, the stairs will be fixed to a decent standard, a new cupboard built to cover electrical metre, existing cupboards fixed up and 8 doors hung. Oh, and the skirting is included in the 2.800. I wonder if that's a good deal?

RoxieLoxy · 19/11/2023 22:27

We're also paying about £850 for 5 days. I think you need to get another quote!!

Is that 8 internal doors or 8 cupboard doors?

Dbank · 19/11/2023 22:29

If it's new plaster it will need 3-4 coats, so I don' think your quote is far off the mark, but you'll always be able to find someone who will do it for less....

Vettrianofan · 19/11/2023 22:30

I just did all woodwork and wallpaper stripping myself, and got the decorator to wallpaper. Saved a huge fortune.

Loubelle70 · 19/11/2023 22:31

Primer and emulsion £60...long handled roller £30...paint brushes £20...stairs ladder £80...

And you can re use them oc.
Id do it myself

Vettrianofan · 19/11/2023 22:32

Ours was £315 for hallway and stairs wallpapering.

Aquamarine1029 · 19/11/2023 22:33

Is there a reason you can't do it yourself?

AlohaRose · 19/11/2023 22:34

I think it depends very much where you live in the UK! We lived in Surrey for years and I remember paying about £400 per room, then moved to the SW and paid £500 for a large hallway, stairs and long landing as well as skirting boards and door frames.

OdeToBarney · 19/11/2023 22:38

It's new plaster, but it will still need prepping, inc a mist coat. Paint has gone up in price HUGELY. I was quoted £1k for a bedroom (admittedly, this did include woodwork) 4 years ago. I don't think it's unusually expensive, but will depend on where you live (I'm in Surrey).

Yes, i wrote it on my post. Because it involves the stairs area we are a bit afraid of falling as we don't have a proper ladder for that.

The rest of the house we've painted ourselves.

There could be many reasons. I’ve always decorated myself, now I can’t- and I’m only 50! DM at 72 can still do her own.
It doesn’t matter the reason op wanted a professional to do it, they were asking was their quote reasonable, nothing else.

Yeah, ill probably have to get another quote. Maybe ill try a handyman with painting experience.
I was expecting around £700 as no woodwork or sanding/filling involved.

@Cocoalover that sounds really expensive to me. I paid £850 (labour only) to get an entire kitchen ripped out and refitted a couple of months ago.

PurpleWisteria1 · 19/11/2023 22:28

Sorry I actually meant 6 doors hung, and internal

Oh no I've just paid a deposit too. When we had our kitchen done we paid a few thousand for labour but the rooms are large so I don't know if that makes such a difference.

brainstories568 · 19/11/2023 23:23

I paid £1100 last year to paint the walls and ceiling of my (3 storey) home in SW London/Surrey borders so depending on where you are that feels reasonable. It took about a week. The guy was recommended by a friend who was also using him, who was recommended by their neighbours etc and lived around the corner. We didn't shop around for quotes on the basis that we've said we will do it ourselves for 5.5 years since moving in, both work full time in demanding jobs and have young kids, so it's clearly not going to happen even though until that stage we have always done our own decorating. He also came back for another week to do the living room... Again, we have also had that on the list since moving in when I was pregnant and it was lovely to have someone come in, do the job and not have to stress about leaving them alone etc. We did paint the new kitchen ourselves though when our child was smaller and napped!!

You can buy a proper ladder for much less than that contractor wants to charge you.

If you don’t want to do it yourself, you don’t want to. No need to justify it as there are always posters then telling you that you can buy ladders etc or coming up with other reasons why you should do it yourself.

We paid £730 to do hall stairs landing including woodwork but not doors. 2 coats. North West. We got wall paint, decorator got rest. Very happy.

FallingAutumnLeaf · 20/11/2023 09:25

£650 for stripping wallpaper off 2 flights of stairs, and emulsion plus gloss there and kitchen earlier this year.
We bought the paint on top.
We don't decorate stairs either - especially not with colour changes.
BUT, it's very area dependant.

You should ALWAYS get another quote. we didn't with the above because he painted the old house for us, we knew he was competitive and did decent work

3-4 coats? 3 maybe, including mist coat. But 4? You'd have to be using really crap paint, or very exceptional colours.

Est1990 · 20/11/2023 21:10

I've requested a quote from another local painter! Ill keep you updated 😁
