mist coat gone wrong

I had a new bathroom fitted with all the walls and ceilings being re plastered. I am painting it myself to save on cost,

I purchased some cheap white paint and watered it doen to create a mist coat. When I started to apply it was dripping everywhere down my nice new tiles etc when doing the ceiling and onto the bath etc. I paniced and added more paint to about single to double cream consitancey, definitly thinner than normal. It went on better, but I am now worried it was too thick what can I do?

Also how long should a mist coat like that take to dry.

It should be thin enough to drop everywhere. You need to put dust sheets down over all of you bathroom stuff before you paint and masking tape then in place. The mist coat should only take an hour or so to dry. You will only know if it is too thick when it all cracks off when you paint the other layers on top of it. Then you will need to sand the cracked areas and re do the mist coat and then repaint the whole wall/ ceiling.

Ive never watered paint down for a mist coat on new plaster, i know some swear by it by but i just roller a thin coat on and leave it , never had any problems.

I didn't water it down either. Just used cheap contract matt. We've had every room plastered so had to repaint every wall and had no issues.

As it will be hard to get the suspect coat off, I would apply second watered down coat, it won't do any harm.

You'll soon know when the mist layer comes off on the roller. ....

Tip for next time, with bare plaster consider using a paint sprayer, takes ages to mask up a room, but if you need to apply 4 coats you can do it in 20 minutes a coat, and the finished is usually way better than using a roller.
