Areas around North Oxfordshire? Bicester, Banbury, Chipping Norton…

I have a friend who needs to move in the spring. He is in his 60s so this will be somewhere to grow old. It needs to be convenient for West London and Manchester so he’s picked areas roughly north of Oxford. He has zero connections there.

Budget is around £425k max. Cash. He is pretty flexible on type of property but must be a freehold house. 2 bedrooms minimum. A small easy maintenance garden or yard. Ideally a small town or village with pub and shop and nice walks nearby. No doer-uppers!

He is in London at the moment and working so not too much time to go exploring. Based on Rightmove there seem to be options around the three towns in the title. Bicester seems to work on paper but most of the houses seem to be new build estates so maybe not ideal for retirement.

He is going to explore in January so it would be great to have some ideas for locations. TIA

I've lived in the area for many years and am originally from London. Of the three towns you mention, Chipping Norton is probably the nicest but has no train station. Nearby Charlbury has a station but is quite pricey. Banbury and Bicester are better connected with more facilities, closer to motorways and have train stations but as you have picked up, lots of new build estates particularly Bicester. Both have quite run down town centres and some areas best avoided. Bicester has lots of out of town shopping and leisure and Banbury has recently had redevelopment of the canal area. The villages North of Banbury are quite nice- Deddington has a farmers market, GP surgery, pharmacy and some nice pubs and restaurants, a deli etc.

Sorry, villages South of Banbury- geography was never my strongest point!

Thethruththewholetruth · 18/11/2023 17:44

Morton in marsh, is Gloucestershire but right on the border. Direct train to London. Lovely little town for the older generation. Banbury is a shithole.

Stresa22 · 18/11/2023 17:45

I second Morton in Marsh.

RosamundLeh · 18/11/2023 17:49

Charlbury would be perfect for him – very lively community with lots going on, shops, cafes, several pubs, beautiful countryside, train to London and Oxford. This is right in the centre and has been on the market for a while so they may take an offer https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/137559242#/?channel=RES_BUY

And he should avoid Banbury and Bicester (although there are some nice villages near them).

KinS24 · 19/11/2023 19:56

Thanks so much for all replies. It’s so useful to hear from people who know the areas.
He is a bit overwhelmed by the prospect of the move hence me trying to help. If I say Charlbury he will likely just go there! That house linked is lovely. Very encouraging.
I will suggest a trip to each of Morton and Charlbury. Much appreciated

And Deddington!

For transport links Banbury is best as you have Chiltern Trains down to London/up to Brum, First Great Western Trains to London and Cross Country trains up to the north including Manchester plus the M40 if he drives.
There are 3 large shopping areas in Banbury so easy to shop, lots of facilities like the sports centre, cinema etc. Lots of pubs, restaurants etc and local events going on.

Loulou377 · 19/11/2023 20:34

I third Moreton in the marsh!

JustKen · 19/11/2023 20:41

I go to Banbury from London by train to visit my parents just over the Northamptonshire border. It's a dump. A useful one, because it has a Morrisons, Tesco & Waitrose, plus a cinema and some nice pubs to drink in, but don't go out at night. I feel safer in my London suburb tbh.

girljulian · 19/11/2023 20:42

Banbury has some lovely areas and is very well connected — easy trains to London. You’d also get a lot more for your money in say Easington than you would in any of the nice, Cotswoldy but poorly served and expensive nearby villages. Somewhere like this?

@JustKen It's interesting seeing different people's opinions. I am from Banbury originally but now live in a London suburb - I feel safer in Banbury than London. It's less busy out "at night" which I suppose having not so many people around can feel unsettling if you are used to London crowds. But it's fine.
@girljulian I used to walk past that house everyday going to and from school - the one next door has been extended a bit 😂
@KinS24 if he needs a place "to grow old" he will want a decent size town with facilities. Banbury has that.

Thanks all. Have shared these views with him and he’s grateful for all the input. I think he’d like a pretty, leafy village without many facilities more than a convenient town. He wants to get a dog so walks are important.
He does drive and never needs the train. He wouldn’t be bothered by crime/safety etc but that tends to go hand in hand with run down areas And he wants somewhere inviting and pretty.
Looking at the maps Deddington is spot on for location and size. Nothing for sale at the moment though. We will visit there and wait for the spring selling bump.
Thanks again.

girljulian that Banbury house is cheap! And looks as if it’s near green areas. Hospital and Sainsbury’s walkable for when he’s old!
Very encouraging. I am sure it Banbury can’t be more sketchy than where he lives now in London 😄

If he's thinking of villages then maybe look at Launton which is close to Bicester or Haddenham Bucks which is the next stop southwards on the Chiltern Line after Bicester.

Deddington is pretty but I would say as someone who is stuck in a traffic jam in the middle of it for what feels like hours every week, it has been ruined by being on a main through-road. The traffic is horrendous.

Ha! Yeah. I think most towns are a bit dodge right next to the train station but I'd feel way safer in Banbury than in all but the most central bits of Oxford at night, really. You couldn't pay me to go to Blackbird Leys or even Temple Cowley in the dark these days.

Where is Moreton In The Marsh?

Can't be that pretty little place on the Foss as that is Moreton In Marsh. 😁

KinS24 · 21/11/2023 04:39

Launton added to visit list. Thanks all

Moreton is one of the less pretty Cotswold towns. But it has great transport links, good facilities (has the Fire Service College sorted out the swimming pool yet?), and really excellent GPs - important as you get older.

Makemydaypunk · 21/11/2023 17:34

I visit the Cotswolds often, Moreton in Marsh has good transport links but I feel quite disappointed by the town itself recently, the high street seems to lack proper shops, more arts galleries and cheese shops, however there are lots of places to eat and drink but the traffic running through the town was an absolute nightmare and it feels quite urban to me, Longborough is a lovely village, close to MIM and has a nice pub and a little village shop, I found it very pretty and charming.

KinS24 · 24/11/2023 20:29

Thanks for the new recommendations which I am passing on. He has been for a first visit today starting in Chipping Norton. He didn’t like the estates which had the smart houses he can afford but said the town was OK.
That cottage above is lovely but he is adamant he doesn’t want any grass to mow! Just a little courtyard or patio.
Really appreciate the help.
