It's 1.30am & I'm lying in bed listening to a party that I may as well be at.

I've posted in the past about my paper thin walls in my semi - detached house. I've lived here since 2019 and had an elderly neighbour with dementia who used to have her TV on full volume.
New neighbour (moved in 6 weeks ago) must be having a get together with friends, horrendous noise...... laughing, high jinks, music, really loud chatting and me lying in bed with my ear plugs in and thinking.......I may as well be there, it's all coming through our shared wall. Sadly, I've got a house with paper thin walls and someone who is still partying as we head towards 2am.

Rant over, I just needed to get that all out as sleep is not on the horizon at the moment.
Thank you if you've got this far.

Of course it’s inconsiderate, he must know he’s disturbing you and clearly doesn’t care.

As others have suggested, speak to him and let him know the noise was very loud and kept you awake and you’d appreciate next time him keeping the noise down after (insert whatever time you think reasonable).

I’d ask him for notice but don’t let him think just because he tells you he can then make as much noise as he wants. Definitely don’t tell him you’ll vacate your own home for the night so he can have a good knees up!

If he has no kids every other week you might well be facing this frequently so best to try to sort it.

If he is unreasonable then you can keep a noise log and contact the Council but try speaking to him first. Depending on the Council , contrary to popular belief some do actually take action. Yes you’d have to declare it if you sold but if you’re not seriously going to move then that’s less of an issue.

We had soundproofing panels put in our semi which helps with day to day noise but not parties. Luckily we have considerate neighbours though.

@dameofdilemma yes that's a good.point about not telling him about vacating my house for the night, that really would give him the green light for an even louder party.

About three weeks after he moved in I did go round as his TV was really loud. I asked him if he could hear my TV as I honestly didn't know if mine was too loud. He said he couldn't, but I told him his was coming through the wall
He didn't look happy, but I said we were sharing a wall and had to make it work.
He did turn it down and it's never been loud since.

My neighbours used to be really loud at night. Loud music, arguing, parties… it never seemed to stop.

So, after one particularly annoying episode, I got up early, turned the speakers to the wall and put on a Val Doonican album that I’d bought for 50p at the charity shop. Then went out.

It didn’t solve the problem but I felt better!

I think it would be worth making a bit of noise today so he can see that the walls really are thin. It sounds like you're a very considerate so he probably doesn't realise you can hear him because he can't hear you. I'd also mention it and go over in the night if it happens again as you're friendly with him

Yes, this is a good point. My neighbours don't hear me because I generally wear headphones when listening to music or watching TV. I've managed to drop that fact into the conversation so that they are aware.

Previous neighbours didn't respond to the subtle approach, however, so I went round in my dressing gown at 2am once, which I think was more impactful than a conversation afterwards would have been in their case.

Tolkienista · 18/11/2023 15:33

@ClematisBlue49 that was going to be my approach last night to go round in my nightclothes and ask when was it going to end, but it was literally bucketing down and I chickened out.

The idea of putting loud music on @Kayte198999 has crossed my mind, but he's been out all day and I'm going out in the next half hour too.

Just to add that I think 'revenge noise' can prove counter-productive. Either the neighbour assumes you are happy with noise beyond normal household levels, since you are making noise yourself, or the whole thing escalates into a row and the chances of him showing consideration in the future are reduced.

Tolkienista · 18/11/2023 19:04

@ClematisBlue49 yes I agree with you. I've got a number of friends who've suggested that pathway and it's not my style. I never have music/TV on loud.
If you were to ask me what's my favourite sound......it's simply the sound of silence. I love wallowing in my own thoughts.

I've just got home in the last 5mins and it's so quiet next door, absolute bliss.
As it should be when you're sharing a wall.......well within reason.
