Please which layout would you go for?

2 adults, 1 teen

Currently a debate in our household - help!

Option A - the one with 2-seater+2 armchairs
Option B - the one with L-shaped sofa

Would be very interested in hearing your thoughts! Thank you very much

A. Is that a sink.in your lounge?

PureAmazonian · 15/11/2023 07:12

1st one.

PureAmazonian · 15/11/2023 07:14

Could you loose the side tables in option a and make it a 3 seater?

yikesanotherbooboo · 15/11/2023 07:17

1st one

Tumbleweed101 · 15/11/2023 07:26

It depends who spends most time in lounge. Does your teen sit with you a lot or spend most time in their room? Are you a snuggly family or do you prefer your own space?

For my family id probably do option 1 as I like an armchair to myself, so does my youngest daughter. If I had a partner though I might prefer the sofa and if you have overnight
guests a longer sofa could be more practical.

DH abroad a lot during the week. We like to watch TV series/sports as a family, which might be in favour of the L-shape... Good point about overnight guests. The side table are stools that can be carried around and used as additional seating for the dining table if there were additional guests.
But if L-shape sofa then there is no formal sitting room, which then makes the whole living area more about watching TV?

My vote is for A (having just gotten rid of a sofa with chaise longue as it was SO impractical).

If it was me though, I would look at whether the TV could be more centralised, and I'd be inclined to change the table for something like this:

You could have real chairs obviously and do 2 on the long side and 1 on each short side, but I think it would really help keep your kitchen space open.

You could keep that additional kitchen unit next to the dishwasher then too :)

B, but I'd centralise the tv and include the flexible seating/stools

A.

What are all the boxes round the edge of the living room?
If you were sat in the living room, who can comfortably see the TV?

I'm not sure either plan is right yet. There is a lot of furniture in the first picture.

ClematisBlue49 · 15/11/2023 09:30

I think there is too much furniture at the living room end in the first option. Agree with others that the TV needs to be centralised if it's on the wall. The dining table looks too small and not well positioned. Ideally you'd have more space to get around the other end of the sofa (i.e. centralise it). Is there space for an oblong dining table at the kitchen end to reflect the lines of the run of units?

I'm not a fan of L shaped sofas as they don't add an extra seat in most cases, just space to put your feet up, so if you can manage the first option without it looking cluttered that would be my preference.

Book shelves on the longer end, a console table on the shorter side. The TV is in a cupboard and can be pulled forward and angled if that makes sense. That's the idea

Oblong table, thanks, will have a look

Round tables are a pain and take up space.
A rectangular table that folds lengthways into a console is a good idea

Option C ?

Re Option C, could the sofa be angled the other way? Then you would have views across to the window rather than blocking it, and the people sitting on the end would be able to see the TV more easily.

Generally I like this option better than the first two though.

Seaside3 · 15/11/2023 21:21

Ah ha, I hadn't registered it was a kitchen!

So, for me, there seems to be a lot of sofa versus kitchen. Is this the only loving space?

I'm always keen to try and get fewer focal points. So, I'd be looking at facing the sofas towards the windows and maybe move the TV that way too? At least people can also sit at sofa and chat to people in kitchen.

Unless there's a fireplace, then the TV above makes sense. If there's another living space, I'd bin the TV and have the sofa facing the kitchen.
