Cottage with entrance into the front room, yes or no?

Saw a couple of pretty victorian cottages with the typical layout of the front door opening into the sitting room directly. My main concern would be around cluttering the entrance with shoes and coats etc. Does anyone live in that type of house? How did you sort the storage issue without building a partition wall or a porch?

Is there scope for a shoe/coat cupboard under the stairs?

I built a nice porch. It's not just the storage. It's letting all the heat out of the house every time you open the door.

Ours has a stud wall partition, so we created a hallway.

I've lived in a couple of houses like that - we kept coats and shoes by the back door.

A lot of people with that arrangement use the back door for everyday access. Is this a possibility?

We bought a house like this and I did have my misgivings. But soon got used to it as long as you have a plea for coats and shoes and a designated place for keys etc

We hung coats in the stair turn. Kept 1 pair of shoes each by the front door, under the window and behind the sofa.

I wouldn't get another like that, the lounge never felt cosy and there was a lot of noise from the street (despite putting in brand new 2.5k door!).

I’d only buy it if I could after/ get planning permission for a porch big enough for a shoe rack and to hang coats.

Re the porch, can you find out if you can bild that before buying a house? And what are the costs?
