No heating with our combi boiler

It started fine a few weeks ago then when we put it on earlier this week no heating

Hot water is fine

I checked the pressure and increased it to the line - is there anything else I can try?

I have decisions to make getting out the bath

A) play with the boiler
B) read in bed
C) do some sewing

Can't see the boiler winning somehow....

At some point your hands might become too cold to sew.

Fortunately not last night

But I will have to get someone in

I'll guess. Combi boiler. Hot water working. Radiators not working.

Suggests to me some problem with the radiator water circuit. Maybe the pump has stopped working or maybe there is a valve that is stuck. Moving parts are always the first to go. Another possibilities are the circuit is clogged and needs flushing, or that some sort of interlock sensor is broken, for example the boilers normally have a flow switch that stops the boiler heating if there is not enough flow. Do you have a magnetic trap ? Maybe this needs emptying.

I don't think it sounds like the sort of thing that will be fixed by pressing buttons or more sewing.

The initial proble. Was the receiver for the thermostat so we needed a new thermostat and receiver

Then as he started looking at the boiler to service almost as soon as the heating came on water started pouring out and the seal on the tank (can't remember which tank) had broken/gone

You can't get parts for that anymore so it would mean fitting an external one at £3-400 but that would then be obsolete when we renew the boiler when it breaks down next time so with av20year old boiler (non-condensing) we decided to put it out of its misery!

Ouch!

But at least you've found out before the worst of the cold weather (trying to find a silver lining for you!)

20 years is pretty old. It doesn't owe you much.

And the new one should hopefully be a lot more efficient so will save you on gas.

Yes I hope the new one saves us a bit the faffing about today cost over £5!!

We only moved in in 2017 and we knew it could go at anytime so, we have done well
