Boiler with a hot water tank - ok to turn water off while on holiday?

Hi everyone

We are going away for 3 weeks and for peace of mind I wanted to turn the water off at the meter (we havent got a stopcock), I was going to set my thermostat for the house to 5 degrees to help prevent frozen pipes, not sure if I should do a even higher temperature though.

I've got a hot water tank and system boiler, is my understanding correct that not having a water supply will not harm the boiler as the heating system is a closed loop or should I just turn off the boiler too?

Advice appreciated :)

Forgot to mention, also thinking of turning the hot water schedule off and just resuming when I come back, does mean the tank will be cold for 3 weeks but guessing that should be fine as long as I heat it fully again before using.

Turn the water off but I would never turn the house thermostat down under 14 to,ensure loft didn't freeze

I wouldn't bother. I would leave it all as it is and set the heating to come on for an hour each day to keep it from getting super cold or the pipes freezing.

Wise.

My friend had a burst pipe in the loft when she was away. Water cascaded down through the house wrecking everything.

I would worry about a burst pipe in the loft more than anywhere else.

I think 5C is a bit low personally.

My insurance company insist that the temperature is left at 15°when the home is empty for a period of time. I'd definitely check woth your insurance

Wow! 15 seems high. We don’t have ours much warmer than that when we’re home.
