Just wondered if anyone knows of any companies that provide gas and electric maintenance, services, breakdowns etc etc, apart from british gas who I have tried and found to be unreliable.

TIA

You'd be best off with a local company rather than a faceless national company that subcontract their work out.

Try asking for reccommendations on your local town Facebook group, that's found me a lot of good tradespeople.

I am surprised you found BG unreliable because I have always found them very helpful.

I am interested in heating systems so spent some time learning about them. Every time I chat to the BG engineer who comes to service the boiler I get the impression they are knowledgeable and know what they are doing and I have talked to them on a number of issues. They seem especially good on regulatory issues.

I think if you go to a local company you may get someone who is genuinely very good and cheaper. Or you may get a complete cowboy. It's a bit of a lottery unless you are capable of calling them to account.

Sometimes you have to ask yourself the question, are the problems because then engineers service is bad, or are they because the system they are trying to fix completely knackered and beyond help.

Yes sometimes it is the fault of the repair engineer who gives bad service. But other times it can often be the fault of the consumer who expects miracles for next to nothing. Without actual knowledge of the problems/faults, it's hard to know which.

Unfortunately I think the only way round it is to get some knowledge of electric/heating system operation yourself. That may not be enough to fix, but is enough to make sure that you aren't completely at the mercy of what someone is telling you may be a very expensive repair.
