Best paint for a freshen up

Hi,
I'm selling a house but before we go to market I want to freshen it up and repaint. What colour would you choose? It needs to be reasonably priced and acceptable to the vast majority of people.
Magnolia? Very pale grey?
I normally go bright so neutrals are not my thing

Do the rooms get plenty of light? Greys can look too cold if not. Following suggestions are all Dulux...

I find New Meringue works well in any light. It's a creamy off white, but quite cool, not too yellow or pink / beige.

If you prefer grey undertones then Milky Pail is nice. It's an off white but looks like a very pale grey.

If all else fails, many people swear by Timeless, another off-white, lighter than the others - looks white in some lights. Or Almond White if you want something warmer.

Thanks clematis!

Second Timeless as a good option - pretty much white, but a bit warmer and seems to work in most lights!

I definitely wouldn't go for grey if you are doing this to sell. The grey fad is looking dated now. As others have said better off going for an off white.

LindaDawn · 04/11/2023 08:25

Really put off with grey walls when looking a photos on rightmove! Looks so dull.

I hate grey too - I just see it everywhere so assume it must be widely liked. I think we'll go with timeless white unless we spot something better.

Secondary question - what about carpet colours?

Carpets are all much more conservative, was in a carpet shop this week and they keep seven neutral low pile synthetic rolls in stock as they fly off the shelves, three shades of grey and four brown/beige variants. 50% go for a mid grey currently and that hasn't changed with the over-ness of grey. Anything else will be more ££ and you won't get any money back on it. So if you're hating grey, I'd go with biscuit type colours

comeundone · 04/11/2023 11:57

In all honesty though, if the carpets aren't terrible and this is to sell the house, don't waste the cash on carpets, get some rugs you can reuse to freshen the rooms and or hire a carpet cleaner. Even for one smallish room you're looking at £300ish with fitting, you'll never see that back.

ClematisBlue49 · 04/11/2023 12:11

I tend to go for a light biscuit colour with carpets. It goes with everything and adds warmth to a room. Plus it's easier to keep clean than cream / off-white if you have lots of people coming round to view the house.

What are the floors made of? You might be able to get away with cheap rugs.

ScaredSceptic · 04/11/2023 12:35

I'd avoid grey carpet too. I always think it looks like office carpet. A biscuit colour would go nicely with timeless.

fishfingersandtoes · 05/11/2023 09:50

Excellent! I knew Mumsnet would know what to do. Light biscuit and timeless it is.

I scroll past boring grey homes.

Also boring pale wood kitchens.

Some people like colour OP -

Show is one of your rooms?

This is probably the one with the maddest decor. Mainly I'm wanting to repaint because its all marked.

What state is the wallpaper in?
From that photo, I'd leave the carpet, curtains and wallpaper. Paint the green in some "none white".
We have both almond white and timeless in this house currently. I think I prefer the almond.

fishfingersandtoes · 05/11/2023 21:01

Wallpaper has stickers on it and the carpet is quite moth-eaten. The curtains are fine though.
