Hi everyone

Planning a move to Nottingham to be closer to partners family north of Nottingham and need advice on which area to choose. Most important is schools for 6 year old mainly thinking about secondary and 1 year old (when time comes)

Need good access to Train to London, research has led us to West Bridgford does this sound right? should we avoid houses close to football ground?

Budget is 600k but could go a wee bit higher but ideally 550k or so, we need a 4 bed or a 3 bed that could get a dormer to make it a 4 bed. Would like a couple of bars restaurants local as well

Is there an area cheaper than west bridgeford with great schools and handy for commute to London once a week?

Thanks for your time sorry if i have missed any key information

I live outside of nottm near derby but used to work in Nottingham so I can be some help but not a lot but it may bump your thread. I know that mapperley and west b are popular areas as is Beeston the other side of the nottm univ on the south side it's on the tram system and also close to queens medical centre and the uni b Other areas popular with my colleague and friends are lady bay, Wilford, ruddington. Hope this helps

West Bridgford has the two best schools in the county (Rushcliffe Academy and West Bridgford School), but both are difficult to get into and you need strategic thought and planning from primary ahe to get them a place.

To get a place at either you need to both live in catchment and go to a feeder primary. If you move to live in the catchment of, say, WB school, but get offered a primary place at a feeder school gor R school - you could well end up with a place snd neither because you have yo be in a feeder primary and also in catchment. So do your homework.

Areas in Gamston, Edwalton and Ruddington fall into catchment for Rushcliffe school. But you should find a property in West Bridgford for your budget.

That said, all of the secondary schools in Rushcliffe Borough Council are great schools - so anything South of the Trent. I thonk there are 8 to choose from. That might be a long commute to North Notts tho - where abouts will this be?

Hello, I have lived in Bridgford for 20+years and brought my kids up here. Has been amazing place to bring up kids, everything is 10 mins away...swimming, dance, gymnastics, football, rugby, hockey, brownies, cubs etc. So many clubs and groups. Some excellent GP services too. City centre and train station so close and great public transport routes there. As previous poster said research the catchment primary schools and secondary schools as you have to go to a feeder primary school to stand a chance of getting into either Rushcliffe or West Bridgford.

You should get something for your budget in West Bridgford or Lady Bay, but Gamston and old Edwalton are still walking distance and you get slightly more for your money. Ruddington is a fab place too, lovely centre, but they are having difficulties getting into Rushcliffe now as there has been a huge new build estate built at Edwalton.

Lady Bay and Bridgford areas near the City Ground and Trent Bridge do struggle for residential parking on football and cricket days. On the flip side it's great being able to nip to an evening 20/20 match with the kids.

DM if you want further info.

Mapperley is nice and has a great reputation, however it's closely situated to less nice parts of the city which can't be avoided when going into Nottingham. It is also quite small, lots of cafes and bistro type places but little else.

West bridgford is much better with lots to offer, which is why it is one of the more popular places to live.

If you require good transport links, have you considered Newark or Bingham?

Thanks we sort of looked at Newark but preferred Nottingham

Thanks yes sounds like we need a plan on Primarys and hope our 6 year old gets in to a feeder, how do you find out which schools are the feeder schools?

one of us will commute to London once a week the other to Sheffield twice a week, family based close to Mansfield

The feeder schools are named in the admissions policy for both secondaries.

FloofCloud · 03/11/2023 16:24

Definitely west bridgford but I'm biased as I've lived here since 1995 lol
Great schools but check catchment for west bridgford school and Rushcliffe school as it's almost impossible to get in if you're not in feeder and catchment.
My kids went to west bridgford infants, junior and the senior school and they've been very good.
There's tonnes to do, centre is great for restaurants and bars/coffee shops, had a great vibe, loads to do and it's great for dogs as loads of o
Countryside very close.
Good luck but you'll find something in your price range. I'd be inclined to look centrally and try to avoid some bigger roads like Loughborough, Meltin and Radcliffe roads as there's traffic.
House prices are stable here too and have been since I've lived here
Good luck!

SquigglePigs · 03/11/2023 16:47

The Beeston/Wollaton side is nice too. You'll get a lot more house for your money there. The schools are pretty good and there are trains from Beeston station into London. Beeston has a nice town centre, independent restaurants etc and trams into the city centre.

Also nearer the M1 for hopping up to Mansfield and Sheffield.

Further out of Nottingham, Southwell is a lovely market town, has train station and excellent Minster School which is also very highly regarded. Six miles from Newark and 11 miles from Mansfield. Same property prices to West Bridgford. Also has some surrounding gorgeous villages too .

CamperConundrum · 03/11/2023 17:06

Southwell is a lovely market town, has train station and excellent

What train station?

I'd second the suggestions of also looking at Bingham (drive or train to Grantham to get on the East Coast Mainline) or Beeston/Long Eaton area.

NotMeNoNo · 03/11/2023 18:18

I just have to say I live near West Bridgford and Mansfield feels like a loooong way away (have been trekking up to the hospital a lot recently). However I just checked Google Maps and it's only 10 minutes shorter from Mapperley. If I'm getting a train to London I usually drive out to East Midlands Parkway but the bus and tram into the city centre are also good.

Rapunzel91 · 03/11/2023 21:31

If you can afford it I would definitely chose West Bridgeford over Mapperley. West Bridgeford has a lot going on and easy access to everything. As someone else mentioned, Wollaton is also really lovely.

Southwell is beautiful but I’m not sure how their train links are. There are also lots of beautiful villages between Nottingham and Southwell that are really pretty, but you won’t really get that cafe culture.

Woush · 03/11/2023 22:29

I'll just add a cautionary tale about West Bridgford...

What is your personality like on urban life? I moved last year from a village in North West Notts, and since DH and I both work in West Bridgford, we wanted to move South of the Trent (ie South East Notts). We had a similar budget to you and looked at West Bridgford since it was the obvious move.

What I found is that, because I moved from a village, I found West Bridgford (and the immediate surroundings) too urban for me. They were much more City-like than was my preference.

To many, being very urban and having everything on your doorstep is a massive positive. I wanted a more "villagey" feel and so we discounted WB on that basis and went for one of the South Notts villages on the boarder with the Vale of Belvoir. FYI, my commute to West Bridgford (and so the train station and all the other amenities) is 20-25 minutes. But I'm surrounded by a village community and green space. Plus, all the schools in the area are great, but with less stress attached to getting a place than WB.

If you don't mind busy, urban, city life, West Bridgford is for you tho. It just wasn't for me.
