... and can comment on how much of a nightmare it was?

We took an old Rayburn fire/stove type thing (1970s I think) out of a house and fitted a gas fire instead. It was messy, but not massively so and was all done in a day and a half.

A wood burner should not be too bad as it's just a contained unit, but it depends on how dirty the chimney/flume thing is.

Get the chimney cleaned out first.

We have moved into a house where the owners illegally installed theirs, so wouldn't sell it to us with it in situ. The hole makes the room cold, and we get constant soot deposits (they never, ever swept the chimney). If you're going to remove it, make sure there is something to draught proof, e.g. a chimney balloon, and that the chimney is well swept.

We had one removed, gave us back the space (young kids at the time, large fireguard!).

Didn't have any problems, but it was a flue through the wall one. Got it brushed out, sealed each section as it was removed, no mess. Log burner unit itself was bloomin heavy. Took 3 people to move it.

Thanks all, yeah we're concerned about the hole it'll leave, it's one that goes up into the chimney. Ideally we'd get it boarded up but not sure how practical that is. The plan is to put shelves in the space.
