IOM - property and quality of life

This is probably more a chat thread than a property one but what's the Isle of Man like for living and property?

Healthcare?

Would have a reasonable budget but more smaller bungalow than a 17m estate!

Hi

Just seen your post and seen nobody had answered.

IOM is a beautiful island. The pace of living is much slower than other parts of the UK. Very safe and chilled out.

Property prices are expensive both to buy and to rent. Rentals at the minute are circa 1.4k a month for a 3 bed semi. 3 bed semi to buy you are looking at about 300/320k.

Health care is hit and miss. Long waits for appointments and only have a small hospital. Alot of patients need to travel off island to be seen by consultants.

Getting on and off the island is expensive and can be very unreliable especially in winter.

Cost of living is very high as everything is imported. No choice of big supermarkets etc. Tesco and Co-OP. Lower income tax rates help with this a little.

Saying all that, I love it and wouldnt live anywhere else!

No worries.

@Nomorebeer22 I am curious, what’s the weather like on the Island? We are on the other side of the Irish Sea on land, and the wind is brutal, tiresome and relentless.

Nomorebeer22 · 20/11/2023 13:27

Winter is wet and windy but summers are lovely.
The weather on island can be completely the opposite from one end of the island to the other. Been known to be in a pub beer garden with a pint and in a vest top melting whilst it's a hailstorm only 20 minutes down the road!

My DSis applied for a job at the hospital over there. She found that she couldn't afford to rent or buy based on her salary so turned it down. Accommodation was much more epxensive than she'd expected.

A bit late to the party!

As someone who moved here many years ago, just don't. The only people who seem to manage here are retired people, with no mortgage, decent savings and no ties. Maybe that's you.
If you have responsibilities or family across (the "mainland") then the costs of travel are crippling. No Lidl or Aldi, food is expensive. Renting is shocking and difficult if you have pets and children.

People don't realise how much this is not part of the UK. Finance - ironically, can be hard work, only 2 credit cards available to residents (you can't keep your existing UK ones). Mortgages are expensive and there isn't choice or flexibility.

Primary schools are good, no SATs, high schools less so. Different funding for university if you have teens and you lose the option for student UK loans if you live here more than 3yrs.

The island is beautiful, there's no doubting that. The weather is appalling. Winters are long, windy, damp and misty, very few crisp winters days. Summer is short and often not great.

Healthcare is hit and miss. We have a nice modern, clean hospital, but waiting lists for some things are huge. GPs can be difficult to access. Other things need to be treated across, flights are covered, but everything else isn't, having to fly/ sail when you are already ill or recovering from surgery is no picnic - take it from one who knows! If you are thinking of retiring here, then thats something to think about. Health insurance is technically required to travel even to the UK, we have reciprocal agreements with them for emergency treatment, but nothing extra. No European health agreements. We aren't part of the UK NHS.
