Upvc cladding of wooden soffits & fascia

I'd appreciate any thoughts and advice (PigletJohn are you there? 😂)

I'm in a 30 year old new build style house. The wooden soffitd/fascia haven't been regularly maintained. I've had a roofer check them out and he suggests that the wood is still sound and cladding is a good solution. The roofer is well-liked and recommended locally. From my Internet research, some people recommend that the cladding will just hide eventual rot. I'd really appreciate some advice on the approach to take. I have a quote for cladding a roof and attached garage (<£3k)

If the wood's still sound, why not just paint it?

You could replace the wood with plastic.

I'm an architect and usually shy away from UPVC but I do prefer it (most of the time) for standard soffits and fascia's as they are a pain to redecorate and people just don't do it so they rot/split.
If you have deep soffits I'd avoid as UPVC can look awful if there is too much and I've only really specified it in black as but keen on the white.
We still have wood on our main house as we have a decorative fascia but on my studio and garage I have a black upvc soffit & fascia - be careful though go for wood grain and not too shiny rather than shiny plain plastic which can look naff and quite cheap.
Get a decent product that's not to thin as it can warp.
