Kitchen design help

We will be getting a new kitchen next year. I‘ve been imagining having a u shape with a small peninsula.

We live in a old house with low ceilings and windows. Which means one side of the U plus the peninsula will have low countertops (we have this issue in our current kitchen).

Person from kitchen shop came over yesterday and suggested something I hadn’t even considered- to make an L shaped kitchen and keep the wall where the window is free. Then have an island instead. The hob would be on the island.

I really like the idea but am worried that we would lose prep space.

Would love to hear your thoughts

I think I would measureyour current hob width and the physical worktop space on the bank you’re removing.

I would then check against the size of the proposed new island - if you take the hob size out, do you have more or less room around it than the existing worktop space you measured?

I’d think you would end up with more prep space with an island, but hard to tell without drawings/sizes.

So you would be working as far away as possible from the natural light source? That’s quite odd as an idea.

Also usually the services ( water, gas if you have it) would run along the outside wall, so how will a sink, dishwasher etc drain?

The sink and dishwasher would stay where they are so no issues with drainage.

I‘ll try to upload a picture later when I have more time

Having the lower worktops to accommodate a window seems quite unusual. Without seeing the room, difficult to advise but presumably you have 3 usable walls and one with a window. For one long wall, have units and then an island running in front of it. Islands are very user friendly as you can alternate quickly between prep surfaces. You can also run water/gas/electrics to the island if you prefer hob/sink in the island - the pipes/cables go under the floor.

Agree with the proposal.

U shape is not efficient as the corners are hard to use well.

Try to keep the island free of hob though.

Have a tall built in oven. Put the sink and hob on the long run at opposite ends. The u has more worktop but it is a real compromise in the corners.
