Plumber taken our money

In May my husband had a plumber out to look at our leaky dishwasher pipe - an issue that had been going on for almost a year and we’d already paid several people to fix, but solution has never worked. This guy told us what we needed to do but that he needed my husband to pay for parts upfront. We were fairly desperate to get it fixed by this point and my husband paid him. The guy had a date to come back and do it but kept cancelling for various reasons. Eventually we said we’d get someone else to sort it and we’d like our money back. Since then the plumber has continually promised to pay us and then doesn’t for various reasons. I can see him advertising his services on FB. Is there anyway we can get our money back?

Did you pay by cash 🤔

You comment on his FB posts, still waiting on our refund of £
he's had long enough.

No. My husband did a bank transfer

How much money are we talking about here?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 01/11/2023 09:01

Do you have details of him to take
him to small claims?

Comment on Facebook, with screenshots of the bank transfer and messages. Hit all his posts in one go as he'll probably block you!

Around £200. He keeps saying he’ll pay it etc and never does

I think even of you don't have receipts for the money paid if you have written communications with him you probably have enough evidence to make a small claims court pursuit worthwhile.

Two things though. One is that if you do threaten to go down the small claims route then sometimes that will spur people on to resolve the issue, especially if it is a relatively small sum of money. To them it is easier just to pay than go through the process. The other is that going via the small claims route does take time and effort - you have to figure out whether it is worth your time and stress to do so.

It's not stressful at all to make a small claim. You do it online and pay about £50 which gets added on to the amount they owed you.

It's easy, and quite quick

And if the guy vanishes or refuses to pay, you are out by another £50?
