I have a hammer drill from
amazon. I’m not sure it’s even branded but it had good reviews. It’s blue 😂. Corded, as I hate having to worry about charging things.

I love it. It makes DIY so much easier. I actually look forward to it

That should read Dewalt .Husband says it's the best drill he has ever had.

Good luck!

I love drilling... 😀

We use Makitas, they are a good quality firm- if you buy a cordless then you can get other cordless tools from them that will use the same batteries. So you only need 2 or 3 batteries for all your tools- a big saving.
You will need a hammer drill for masonry. I look for a soft-start type for most tools where they are available, less of a jolt when they start. If you have very hard brick/masonry (we do- Accrington brick in our case) you might need an SDS, but don't get one of those unless you really need them. They're expensive and you need a fair bit of strength to use them safely.

Dont forget the drill bits! If you have not bought them already make sure you get good quality ones; especially the masonry drill bits. You will only probably need one or two sizes so its worth buying individual drill bits rather than a set. Also its often worth buying more than one of each bit if you are drilling walls - they can bend/ snap easily and there is nothing more frustrating than having to make a dash to B&Q in the middle of a diy session.

I have a sudden yearning for a drill, even though I don't have anything to drill. Is that weird?

KievLoverTwo · 08/11/2023 00:00

We use Makitas too. It's what a lot of builders use. Bloke in B&Q convinced us, even though we were leaning towards one twice the price (erm, might have been Karcher?).

For diy screwfix own brand is fine.

Or Aldi if the week is right.

Makita and De Walt are great, but for pro use.

I used to work with chippies back in the day (1980s) The old blue metal Bosch Pro tools were great, but they went downmarket in the last 80s. DeWalt were good but we only used them for the big bench tools, which was their niche at the time. Makitas were just coming in, and they were so much quieter and compact than the old workhorses we used to have, and could run for a long time at once without burning out; they were also quick to do a cordless range, which was great for us. When we had to plump for a range here at home, we went with Makita. Have never regretted it.
