Water tank in loft needs cleaning

We have a covered water tank in the loft. We put it in when we renovated the house 7 years ago however we're getting black line marks around the toilets if we are away for a couple of weeks and same in downstairs toilet sink. These are all fed from the tank. Our drinking water is from the mains.

I've never heard of anyone cleaning their tank but I suppose it is a necessity. Has anyone done it?

No one else had to clean their water tank then?

not us, we changed to a new boiler and had tank removed

No, never heard of that
When my parents loft tank was removed it was 40+yrs old and never been touched, ours was 30yrs and the same.

The only thing that sometimes has to be done to older tanks is to put a lid on them.

As PP said, with the change to combi boilers, many tanks are being removed.

I know lots of tanks are being removed. Because we are in a low pressure water area our builder recommended the tank so we'd have good pressure. So we have it. We do have a cover over it.
