I have never had one of these is it an energy guzzler ? Also if i want to remove it will mean replacing the whole kitchen?

£3000 per year maintenance? What nonsense. Try £150 per year. and about £30 per week to run and worth every penny!

Agree- one service a year £150 ish and ours is 20 years old.
Having said that , it sounds like yours is one of these new fancy Aga ranges which you turn on and off and work like a ( posh, expensive) normal fan oven. https://www.rangecookers.co.uk/products/aga-masterchef-deluxe-110-dual-fuel-black,6102/?gclid=Cj0KCQiA35urBhDCARIsAOU7Qwn25AlqzSWRaxADeU9vhmzyDsrE6arJrA87EuJsvv4caLmhhRdDpAaAsFdEALww_wcB

Once you have used an Aga (properly) you will never want a conventional oven ever again. I was a sceptic until I moved into a house with one and have never looked back. It would be the first item on my list in a new house or kitchen!

This for me too.

servicing £90 a year
1800 litres of oil per year (price fluctuates hugely)

agree with others though that yours doesn’t sound like it is an Aga

mamma65432 · 29/11/2023 17:33

I've had two Rayburns, an oil one which broke down at least once a year despite being serviced once or twice a year and a coal powered one which you took your life in your hands every time you added more coal - had that removed pretty quickly - but a modern rangemaster sounds fine, is it just for cooking on or is it for heating as well?

Movinghouseatlast · 29/11/2023 17:44

It's not an always on Aga if it has 6 rings, they don't have that.

Did the top have round lids you lift up?

It could be an electric Aga or a Rangemaster in which case its just a normal range cooker.

Handovertothetedcross · 29/11/2023 17:45

Agree £3000 per year is made up nonsense. We had an oil one which was £300 per year to service. Now have an electric one that doesn't require any servicing whatsoever. Do live in a 300 year old cottage though in a rural area, Aga in a flat is absurd

Movinghouseatlast · 29/11/2023 17:48

Is it like this?

This is just an Aga brand cooker, just a normal cooker, no maintenance etc. A lovely thing to have for "free'.

We had one for eight years, because it was in situ in a house we rented and later bought, but wouldn’t have one again.

Ginmonkeyagain · 29/11/2023 19:14

I grew up in a hoise with an Aga one and learnt to cook on one.

You'd have to pay me to even have one again. Terrible things.

Brin1960 · 29/11/2023 19:34

An electric Aga is not a normal range cooker - it is the same as any other Aga, just powered by electric rather than gas/oil/coal

Brin1960 · 29/11/2023 19:36

I'd put an Aga in a flat. Why not? Would heat the whole flat and you'd still have the perfect cooking appliance.

Who wants to pay £120 a week to heat a flat? Because that's how much it would cost to keep our Landlady's Aga on at the moment.
(Electric, 150cm)

Brin1960 · 29/11/2023 21:08

where do you get £120 a week from? Costs nowhere near that! You can run an Electric Aga for less than £20 per week. Our four oven gas Aga is on permanently and only costs £40 per week to run.

My landlady was paying £70 a week, then electricity went up a huge amount, so that is the new running cost. It has to be on 24 hours a day, it can never be turned off.

I am sure there are models smaller than 150cm that are cheaper, and I believe more modern electric ones can be turned on and off. Not this one.

Agreed, but a six ring cooker also doesn't sound like an aga electric or otherwise?

Also, isn't gas 7p a kilowatt versus 29p for electricity?

If so, you are very lucky to have a gas one.

HollowEgg · 29/11/2023 21:14

They’re not that expensive to run considering they heat and cook and are on 24/7, I love ours but we live in a large old house. Plus there would be outcry from the dogs if it went.

3peassuit · 29/11/2023 21:19

We’ve just replaced our old oil Aga with an electric version. It’s cheaper to run as we have a field full of PVs. I love my Aga but it would be madness to have one in a flat.

Copernicus321 · 29/11/2023 21:56

Sounds like you've got one of the new S-Series rather than the old fashioned Aga's (perpetually "on" 24x7x365 and ready to cook) 4 oven 2 hot plate cast iron 1.5 ton behemoths that guzzles oil. Most of the comments on this thread refer to the cast iron monster ranges usually found in farmhouses and country houses. In old country houses Aga's are a necessity, they take the place of a damp proof course.
