House with a small garden if you have kids?

Husband and I have seen a house in an area we like and are really interested in the property as it has lots more internal space (which is what we need) but it has a small garden.

We have two young kids so part of me thinks we are insane to consider. However the house is right next to a lovely big park with woodlands and it has lots of really great community events all the time - the neighborhood has a really nice community feel, much moreso than where we currently are, which is part of the appeal!

Are we insane to go for it? Our current home has a decently sized garden but i feel we've never made the most of it but conventional wisdoms is it's handy to have? Also worry about the appeal of this house selling on, though there's scope for us to do improvements and maybe add an extra room.

It could really work as an outdoor room. North facing would be more of a deterrent than size.

if you take down the conservatory put a shade over. That way they can play outside without being covered in sun screen.

How bad is the conservatory. Falling down

Can you live without the extra room

Pleaselettheholidayend · 29/10/2023 10:18

Conservatory is a bit grim, I'd remove it and the knock the kitchen through to the front reception room and make a through kitchen/diner. Other half disagrees and would remove conservatory but use the space to extend the kitchen out.

We had a small paved garden which was great when the kids were young.

Once they were older tbh they need far more space than the average garden gives to play football/chase/ride bikes. Park next door sounds ideal.

Where's the massive shrine???

Pleaselettheholidayend · 29/10/2023 10:24

Shrine is yellow blob! It's bloody huge, I hadn't remembered it being so big! Like a little grotto made out of stone.

Yes, if you lose the conservatory and put in a nice paved seating/eating area somewhere, and you have a park next door, that looks very do-able, particularly with a nice sunny aspect. The amount of threads on MN I've read where kids aren't actually all that bothered about being in their own garden and much prefer the park! And this way you'll always be able to see them when they are outside, plus nice and close for bringing food and drinks out when eating outside.

When DH and I were househunting we looked at a village where all the gardens were massive and there was one semi derelict children's playpark. In our village the gardens are nearly all tiny and there is a big playpark that gets updated every few years, where families have picnics together and hang out after school.

If you have room for a swing and to spread out a paddling pool in summer and a sandbox, that's all they need. Take them to the park for climbing frames and seesaws and den building.

You can't tease us with a massive shrine to the Virgin Mary without a picture!

ithinkicanithinkican · 12/11/2023 12:53

Congrats! I am another one wanting to see the massive shrine once it's all yours 😂

bathroomcupnoard · 12/11/2023 13:02

Just here for the shrine....

Pleaselettheholidayend · 12/11/2023 13:34

Here she is! Now how to evict her - not religious enough to keep her, just superstitious enough to be scared of skipping her....

Quite disturbed by the animal sacrifice that's been left at her feet.

Pleaselettheholidayend · 12/11/2023 14:05

Tbh I'm guessing they will take the shrine with them !

It may be in the fittings and fixtures to take

Ellmau · 12/11/2023 15:08

How exciting! I hope you love your new home.

UpsyDaisyMegaphone · 12/11/2023 22:30

That shrine is brilliant. If you don't take it out in the first week though you'll be explaining to people a decade later that it's not actually yours and you will be getting rid eventually 😀
