Darlington area?

I'm from Newcastle, currently live and work in London but looking to move North for climate and space in the next 5 to 10 years. We'd want detached - proper detached so you can have noisy hobbies - and ideally close to countryside for walks and cycling. And would like to not rely on a car for everything. Budget I guess 550K, or its equivalent in 5 to 10 years.

Northumberland would be the obvious choice but it's pretty expensive and only Berwick and Newcastle have a good mainline stations.

I'm wondering about Darlington. Teesdale is beautiful but remote. I have to admit growing up in Newcastle we were a bit dismissive of Darlington - I should know more about it than I do.

Can anyone help me by giving me Tyne and Wear and Northumberland comparables for Darlington and the nearby areas - something like "xyz is like Morpeth, abc is like Blythe"?

(Or just tell me the places you love or hate - that is really helpful too!)

The scenery around Barnard Castle can be pretty bleak. I'd second Northallerton/Great Ayton etc as the North York Moors are stunning and much prettier than the Pennines.

Traffic in Durham is a nightmare.

It is, although much less bad if you are entering and leaving from the south/ A1 even at rush hour - at least compared to the nightmare that is the M62 corridor!

It's also small and very expensive property wise to buy in the centre due to the huge demand for multi-occupancy student housing. And whilst High Shincliffe and Brancepeth for example are lovely once you are out into the mining villages it can be depressing but cheap to buy I guess.

Ooooh I forgot another Darlington gem - Robineau Patisserie and cafe in Cockerton!

The villages around Redmarshall, Carlton, and Bishopton are nice?

Have a look around Eaglescliffe/Egglescliffe. They are two places right next to one another on the north side of Yarm, which may have the kind of vibe you are looking for, but it’s walkable and you’re not constantly caught up in Yarm traffic which can be a night. There’s a train station with connections to Kings Cross (usually changing at York) or to go north. You can get onto the A66 easily to drive to some fabulous countryside or other towns/cities.

Well that's one view. I think the exact opposite, it's very dull and flat near Northallerton to me.

I think OP you just need to have a few weekends away up here in the north and see how you like the different places/what you are prepared to compromise on!

Village v town life, access to mainline trains and good walking/cycling and whether you must have hills. Also might want to checkout internet/phone signal if it's important - I have virtually no mobile signal in my village on the edge of Swaledale without going outside and waving my phone around in the air until it catches a text message!

Richmond is also a choice perhaps - on the edge of Swaledale, good live music venues, a castle , small independent cinema and great little Georgian Theatre, small independent shops and restaurants but not so good for chain store shops, very hilly. Good bus service to Darlington for trains.

I work on Darlington centre. So many druggies/drunks wandering around in the middle of day it’s unreal.
