Would you buy a house near to a power station?

Its an expensive house(£865k) and its two villages away from a large power station. You can't see the power station from the house or from most of the village.
DH has heard that within 20 years most of our power stations will become nuclear power stations since there will be least resistance to using existing sites and all of the energy grid is in place. He thinks that noone will buy an expensive house near a power station (although this is intended to be a forever house - we're not thining of moving again in a hurry)

Honestly? No.

We have. Moved in last month

Also live 2 villages away from a power station (wonder if it's the same one?!)

It didn't cross my mind to be honest.

Maybe elf! Are you east mids?

You haven't heard the thing about the nuclear stations then?

I don't think you can simply 'convert' a standard type power station to nuclear though. Surely it would have to be built from scratch?

It would have to be built from scratch

I think the plan is to build the nuclear stations right next to the old power stations because all the infrastructure is in place and then take down the old ones. Don't know though. DH was told by a colleague. I can see that it could be true however.

I am east mids! Live west leake.

Small world! We are looking at a house in Barton in Fabis.

My argument to DH is that if it did become a nuclear plant and anything dreadful ever happened then where ever we were this side of Nottingham we would be affected.

He has also been told that if/when it happens it will increase the traffic on the 453 fourfold for a number of years whilst building works were taking place.

I'm going to struggle to convince him I think. Its silly really because we already live the power station side of Nottingham!

TBH we were more concerned about the proposed "eco-village" to be built between Sutton Bonnington and Kingston on Soar.

Its all at the proposal stage at the moment and local residents are opposing it. I guess that that will have implications for the A453 as well if it goes ahead.

However, short of having a crystal ball there was nothing we could do about it and since DH has to within 10 miles of his workplace we were always going to have to live somewhere around here.

And I love it!

You can "what if" all you like but chances are nothing will happen. I'd buy it.

OrmIrian · 11/03/2008 11:48

I would. But I was brought up with a nuclear engineer as a father. We used to go for picnics on Hinkley beach . I'd have no problem with it (apart from the view possibly)
