Who IBU, DH or I?

Situation: we had a 2-storey extension built earlier this year, but due to massive cost overrun we've had to postpone the kitchen island until next year.

Washing is dried either on the line outside or on a clothes horse in the middle of the kitchen, roughly where the island will go. Obviously, more of the latter than the former this year and we both really hate it!

DH wants to put an old-fashioned ceiling-mounted drying rack right above the future island. I think this is a shit plan because the ceiling is only about normal height (8'), so the island will be out of use whenever the rack has washing on it. Because the island isn't yet in situ, he seems unable to visualise the damn thing with a rack of washing dangling onto it. He is motivated in his thinking by neatness rather than practicality, I should stress. I think something like a Leifheit Pegasus over the (rarely used) bath would be a better option. Which of us is talking shit?? Or is there a third option we haven't considered?

I dry clothes on the bannisters using those over radiator hangers. They dry far better anyway as the warm air rises through the house. (I'm lucky to have 2 sets as I'm in a 3 storey house)

I got rid of my tumble dryer due to cost. I'm pretty surprised how many people have suggested getting one. It's not very environmentally sound either 🤷🏻‍♀️

The tumble dryers most of us are recommending are of the heat pump variety. They are different from the traditional type and extremely energy efficient.

Agree on the banisters idea - especially for sheets.

I've never had a tumble drier and never experienced drying issues, no wonder everyone moans their bills are high. Just get some clothes horses you can move into warmer/sunny spots within the house, and put away when not in use.

Could you not swap your washing machine for a combined washer/drier? When we remodelled our utility room we decided that cupboard space was more valuable than having a tumble drier, which wouldn't be used very often, and so bought a combined washer/drier which is perfect. Most of my drying is done outside or using a portable heated drier, but I've got the facility to tumble dry bigger things like towels when needed. I'd love one of the ceiling pulley things in the kitchen, but only for pots and pans, and maybe herbs or onions. I still have memories of my grandmas pulley which only ever seemed to be used to air her enormous discoloured bloomers 😆😆

Presumably no space for a shed/side lean-to with a dryer and clothes horse? A friend has one with a glass roof and dries there all year round.

My parents have a rack over their bath and you hardly notice it. They do have high ceilings though.

Musicaltheatremum · 27/10/2023 18:03

I have pullies by my kitchen. My ceilings are 11 ft and I barely notice it but definitely would if they were 3 feet lower.

DisforDarkChocolate · 27/10/2023 18:11

I once viewed a house where they had put one of the pulley things at the top of a turn in the stairs. It was bloody brilliant, caught all the rising heat, kept the mess out of the way and in the summer an open window let them catch a breeze.

RandomMess · 27/10/2023 18:15

Our pulley is over the stairs - put the way and benefits from the warm air drying.

UsingChangeofName · 27/10/2023 18:25

A pulley makes sense in a lot of houses, but there's no way I'd put it over an island in a kitchen.
I mean, apart from the aesthetics of it, presumably you will have pendant lights over your island ? Also, what about all the cooking smells getting in to your newly washed clothes ?
I'd have thought an upstairs landing would be a much more sensible place for a pulley - both as it is out of site of anyone other than those who live there / going to sleep there, but also from the heat rising aspect.

I wouldn't have an overhead rack where the island is, that sounds ridiculous. Is the island primarily for food prep, or storage?

DaftQuestionForToday · 27/10/2023 18:38

Over the kitchen island?

if he thinks an airer where the island will be is 'messy' how the hell does laundry hanging at head height seem like the solution?? He's had a blow to the head me thinks!!

over the bath is ok, IF it's rarely used. I have an airer that's designed to go over the bath (special feet), but it's a PITA because my shower is over the bath.

what above the kitchen in the 2 story extension.

hard to believe there's not room for an airer upstairs?!
