Drilling Roller blinds onto upvc windows

I currently have uPVC tilt and turn windows. They’re rather ugly and I’d love to replace them, but after doing a costly renovation, don’t have the funds to replace them as they’re in good condition! However I’ve struggled with window dressing. I’ve gone for curtains and voiles in some rooms but for others, have gone for Roman blinds outside of the recess. They look ok, but I’d like to have a sheer roller blind or something underneath for additional privacy as I live on a busy road. I obviously can’t put roller blinds under the romans outside of the recess so I was thinking of putting them on the upvc part of the window frame, which would mean drilling into the frame. Has anyone done this? Or have any other ideas? Thanks!

Gorilla glue the bracket on? Or command strips maybe?
DH did screw our blind brackets onto the window frames but I wouldn’t attempt it myself in case I compromised something. I’m like calamity Jane!

The roller blinds I have the bracket were made to screw in either way so I could recess them.but attach them to the wooden frame rather than directly into the upvc.

We don’t have a wooden frame. The upvc frame is fitted into the brick wall. It’s been the same in our last 3 houses, I’ve not seen anyone’s house with that set up tbh.

Don't drill and ruin your windows! Get tension blinds from blinds direct. I've got them and they are really fab!!

butterflycatcher · 22/10/2023 22:43

Blinds2go do a no drill option too

dreamersdown · 22/10/2023 22:51

Use the no drill option, or use the removable window film you can get from Amazon which makes your windows opaque

17to35 · 23/10/2023 06:48

The no-drill option won't work on tilt and turn windows. it tensions against the frame and so stops the window opening.

Fakeairpodsfakeoodie · 23/10/2023 06:57

Don't you just drill the bracket into the "ceiling" part of the recess? Into the lintel (spelling?)

CrapBucket · 23/10/2023 06:59

I’d have the roller blind within the recess, it will look a lot better, and you can attach it to the underside of the recess.

That has just saved me some money then!

I hadn’t realised the blinds2go no drill wouldn’t work with tilt and turn windows!!! That could have been a very expensive mistake! I don’t understand why though??

The window privacy film sounds the best bet. Lots of attractive designs as well as opaque. Could you do the bottom part of the window and leave the top clear?

Further explanation:
The no-drill blinds fit snugly int the recess using a screw mechanism and a tensioner spring (even top fix blinds would have this problem)
For the window to tilt into the room or swing into the room to clean it, the blind in the recess will obstruct the window opening.
Sash windows or casement windows don't have this problem.
Blinds on tilt and turn windows have to be outside the recess and high enough so that the window doesn't "catch" on them when opening.

Badbadbunny · 23/10/2023 07:44

We've got roller blinds in several rooms. I just make small holes in the pvc frame with a bradawl and use small screws to fix the blind. We took our son's blackout blind down and the filled the holes with a tiny spot of white frame sealant and you can't see anything unless you really stare in the corners.

We don't have the tilt/turn windows, but I imagine anything fixed inside the recess may affect them, however the blind is attached, if any parts of the window opens inwards.

What about perfect fit blinds that clip into the frames of your upvc windows. No drilling required and they work really well.

Trumpton · 23/10/2023 07:51

I used the velcro command strips that you can hang pictures with.
Stuck the brackets up on the side of the frame then slotted in the blind. Very secure.
You could trim the tails of the command strips if you wanted.

So tilt & turn WOULD be okay with PerfectFit type?

Obviously ones which sat in the recess & physically stopped the window opening past them wouldn't be any good with any inwards opening window.

17to35 · 23/10/2023 09:30

Perfect fit just cover the PANES of the window and would be "perfect"
You say obviously......

DRS1970 · 23/10/2023 09:47

You can drill them and then use self tapping screws to hold them up. But be certain you are not drilling a hole that is too big, and be sure it is in the right place. Also, bear in mind any instructions to the blinds travel such as window handles or hinge mounts.

Crazymadchickenlady · 23/10/2023 21:51

I have Luxaflex Duette Tru-fit blinds on my tilt and turn windows but they are expensive. They are great with tilt and turn windows.
