Bathroom refurb - cost

I've been quoted £5k plus VAT for this. Am trying to get other quotes but going thru the usual rigmarole of trades people who don't return calls or don't turn up... So am consulting the hive mind to see if this is reasonable or extortionate.

Shower room refubishment: remove full suite and tiles, make good the plaster, overboard the ceiling, skim all walls and ceiling, make good any floor area that is water damaged, fit new shower tray, tile three walls approx 12 sqm, tile the floor approx 3 sqm, fit new cubicle, refit existing & unit, refit existing wall cabinet, refit existing towel radiator with new valves, and fit new accessories. Customer to supply new suite items and tiles.

Sounds like a reasonable price to me. Similar to what we paid in January this year

LindaDawn · 22/10/2023 18:59

We paid £10k in South East for total new bathroom.

SauvignonBlanche · 22/10/2023 19:05

I’ve just been quoted £6K for the same, what company is it?? 😆

Saschka · 22/10/2023 19:07

Sounds reasonable to me too

Lookingatthesunset · 22/10/2023 19:08

Just paid £6.5k for fitting out my en suite.

Reallybadidea · 22/10/2023 19:10

Try a local plumber. We paid less than that for more work earlier this year. We'd previously had quotes of £5-8.5k for labour by "bathroom fitters".

VeryQuaintIrene · 22/10/2023 19:11

Sounds pretty much the going rate to me, and on the good side of that, even. Had similar work done in London earlier this year and it was a bit more than that.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 22/10/2023 19:38

Oh, this is reassuring. I thought it was a bit high - when I had the shower room fitted out it was c£6k including the suite and tiles. Admittedly that was 14 years ago and of course prices have gone up since, I just hadn't realised how much.

On the plus side he returned my call, turned up when he said he would and sent the quote promptly!

Hum, I recently asked my local builder about this. He said he would work on a day rate of £250 and would take no more than 2 weeks. Obviously not including any materials. This is Beds.

Clickncollect · 22/10/2023 19:55

Sounds pretty reasonable to me. Like you OP, my last bathroom fit was many moons ago so I was a bit shocked at the prices nowadays but had to make my peace with it.

WhatsitWiggle · 22/10/2023 23:54

It does sound on the high side, but a good tradie can name their price, so if he's reliable, has good reviews / recommendations and you got a good vibe from him, I'd just go for it.

Silkiefloof · 23/10/2023 00:00

Going rate now.

Just paid £6.5k for fitting out my en suite.

Same here. We are in south east.

Songsareliketattoos · 23/10/2023 01:49

Sounds ok to me. We've just had a quote for our bathroom refit, including electrics, tiling, all new pipework and soil stack, overboarding ceiling, replaster 2 walls, new floorboards, boarding and floor tiles laid, some walls tiled, new shower and cubicle, new suite. Take out old suite and remove all rubbish. £7500 which we've accepted. We're providing the new suite, shower, tiles.
Like you I was a bit eek about how much costs have risen even in the last 3 years, but happy to have found a decent local company.

GCAcademic · 23/10/2023 01:56

We paid our plumber £4k last year to do broadly similar job, but the plastering and tiling were done by different tradesmen and charged separately.

Missdemeanorz · 23/10/2023 07:21

DP owns a bathroom fitting business. He project manages the contractors.
DP says that his labour fees for this particular type of job will begin at 7k, plus VAT. This pricing applies solely to standard renovations. It is essential to note that DP does not work with clients who provide their own bathroom fittings.

He's based in West Yorks.
