Two smaller bathrooms or one larger?

Would you rather have two small (tiny-ish) bathrooms (one en-suite) or one larger (well, medium sized) bathroom instead?
Trying to decide what's better..

Well it depends..if I could fit a bath in one then 2 smaller

Would depend on whether there is another loo in the house and how many people in the household. More than just dh and me, I'd go for 2 bathrooms.

Rosesroseseverywhere · 18/10/2023 19:17

Surely it depends on how many people live in the house? And their ages?
Me and DH - 1 bigger bathroom would be lush.
Me, DH & 3 kids before they left home - 2 bathrooms to save everyone's sanity!

ComtesseDeSpair · 18/10/2023 19:17

What size a property / family? Three bedrooms or larger / four or more people and I’d probably opt for two bathrooms, especially if I was planning to stay long term / when DC are teens. But it really irritates me when two bedroom flats / houses have two bathrooms, especially if they’re both poky and more useful features are compromised.

honkersbonkers38 · 18/10/2023 19:18

It depends - but as a general rule these days I'd go for two. Nice to have one that is more "public" - but one just for you.

2chocolateoranges · 18/10/2023 19:18

our children are both in their 20s id love another bathroom so I’d go for 2 small bathroom over 1 big bathroom any day.

Mosaic123 · 18/10/2023 19:27

Two. I think it will make the house more valuable in the future.

Although a big bathroom is lovely I'd rather have two than one.

Get some specialist help with the design if possible such as corner shower/toilet for example. And don't forget good storage which will make a small bathroom look bigger as it's tidy.

Fahbeep · 18/10/2023 19:33

A comfortable en-suite shower room needs 1m x 2.4m. Shower tray one end, sink in middle, toilet at other end. For a bath, you need 1.7m x 2m. Bath will fit snug along 1.7m wall leaving 1.7m by 1.4m space for toilet sink and access. Any smaller, and it gets a bit cramped. If you have tall people, you want a 1.8m bath really.

FallingAutumnLeaf · 18/10/2023 19:43

How small is small?
I've just looked up our bathroom sizes. They are a tiny bit bigger than the numbers Fahbeep has quoted. I wouldn't want them any smaller. So, if the rooms would be bigger than those measurements, 2 bathrooms. If you can't get those sizes, 1 bathroom (maybe with a second loo?)

Fahbeep · 18/10/2023 20:16

For context, that's as small as I would take them. a shower room can go smaller length wise but at the cost of reducing usability. Best also to have the doors opening out rather than into the bathroom, and use a 27 inch door, saves three inch of swing.

Am old hand as we did a massive build project that included two en-suites.

parietal · 18/10/2023 20:49

I'd want a house to have 2 loos. So downstairs loo & one big upstairs bathroom is ok but if there is no downstairs loo then 2 small upstairs bathrooms.

shockthemonkey · 18/10/2023 20:52

How many bedrooms?

SunflowerFieldsForever · 18/10/2023 22:01

Thanks all That's very helpful to hear your thoughts.

Oh dear!! Was just thinking maybe two poky bathrooms not great so keep as one, but after reading this......!!

BTW 2beds, 3 people (1 teen)

PinkRoses1245 · 19/10/2023 12:54

two bathrooms would be more attractive when selling. I wouldn't care about their size, as long as one of them had a bath

Intelligenthair · 19/10/2023 12:57

En suite every time. Once you’ve had one it’s rubbish to go back to not having one!

fairlyfair · 19/10/2023 12:59

absolutely 2 bathrooms, the logistics of waiting for turns of a 1 bathroom are not worth it however nice that one bathroom is. At least separate toilet to shower/bath but if 2 separate toilets with sink, keep it at 2.

fairlyfair · 19/10/2023 13:01

No, ensuite can make the room humid, bad odours, noise if your partner gets up early to brush or night pees. IF someone is gassy or something its so gross hearing them.

SunflowerFieldsForever · 19/10/2023 15:12

Ok after reading everything I'm now thinking if it's possible to have an additional separate toilet, and keep one bathroom, that's probably ideal.. Having only one toilet is the main issue for us anyway. I hope I can make it work in our space fingers crossed!

En-suite cloak with toilet and sink? You need very little room if you have a toilet with the sink built on top of the cistern. 1m by 1.4m absolute minimum. Door swing out. 27 inch

SunflowerFieldsForever · 19/10/2023 17:27

Thanks @Fahbeep Great idea

With three people we definitely need two toilets but only one “bathroom”. Would hate to have to hold my pee anytime one of the others was showering shaving or bathing.
