Oxshott Vs Tunbridge Wells

Any info/thoughts on what it is like living in either of these places? Where would you prefer?

We have spent a couple of days in Cobham/Oxshott and loved it. We loved the village in Cobham but seems more houses pop up in Oxshott.

Yet to go to Tunbridge Wells but it has been on our list to visit and a perfect house popped up. We will get there asap. But any insight on the meantime would be greatly appreciated!

(We are expats so our knowledge on Surrey and Kent is minimal!)

Well, they are very different. Tunbridge Wells is a large town, with mixed areas and a lovely town centre. Oxshott is a villagey offshoot of Cobham, very wealthy, Andy Murray and half the Chelsea players live there.

I used to live very near Oxshott and loved it because it doesn't feel like a tow at all, it's very leafy. It's near some fantastic countryside ( walking distance) but obviously near Cobham for shopping, restaurants etc. It's easy to get into London on the train and very close to Gatwick/M25

Thank you so much for your reply. Really helpful!

How is the community feel in Oxshott? Would you say it's easy enough with kids to build up friendships or too small of a village/not enough opportunities compared to Tunbridge Wells?

I don't really know about the community aspect. The cafes in Cobham are certainly packed with women and toddlers during the day! Epsom is pretty close by too.

I've lived in Tunbridge Wells and Cobham so know them both well. Do you have kids? Tunbridge wells has the grammar school system for secondary. Very good schools. It's a great town with lots of bars and restaurants and good shopping. Oxshott is a village. Small but with lots of bigger towns close by. We moved out of Cobham, closer to Woking as house prices were cheaper (slightly - Surrey is expensive full stop). To be honest both areas are lovely. But very different.

Lots of Americans in Oxshott and Cobham because of the American school nearby. You might like that, or you may not.
If you have a blonde bob hairstyle and a very large SUV then you will fit in very well.

Oxshott definitely.

Cobham is lovely but has become very new money the last decade. It’s beautiful to visit and the new money amenities are very naice but if living then there’s a bit of a silent war ongoing between the gin and jag old timers and the Beverly Hills crowd who are in competition to build the largest care home replica. Its lost its class and character a bit sadly.

Too avoid the latter as I am sure they will spread - recommend avoiding private roads and estates and sticking to adopted roads. There seems to be a competition on private roads to become like St George’s hill with ANPR and private security and it’s all getting a bit odd.

Sounds like a healthy budget. Happy house hunting 😊
