Point me the right direction for kitchen inspiration

Planning a new kitchen - and I am so bored by the options. Can anyone suggest sites for some inspiration? It’s a decent sized rectangular kitchen with room for a largish island in it at the moment, and lacking in natural light, so I’m looking to inject lightness through colour. And a period house which I’d like to keep the sense of. Link me up to some ideas?

Please show me exciting kitchens.

for anything like this I just use instagram and search hashtags for vague ideas I was interested in, eg. #greenkitchen #shakerkitchen #farmhousekitchen #periodkitchen or whatever floats your boat!

DidntHaveTheLatin · 18/10/2023 16:59

Ooh there are was an article.in the FT the other day about the return of the unfitted kitchen - maybe start there, if you like the sound of that? I love an unfitted kitchen!

SidandAndyssextoy · 18/10/2023 20:25

I’ve combed the internet but just keep getting the same old firms and nothing exciting me.

I saw that article: I hate shelves though! I need to be able to chuck things behind a door. Also freestanding kitchens attract dirt everywhere!

What about Pinterest or even add kitchen inspiration in the instagram search bar?

minipie · 18/10/2023 20:27

Pinterest

The great thing about Pinterest is you just need to find one image you like and it will
lead you to others in similar style. So it might be hard work at the start but then you hit a good seam.

SidandAndyssextoy · 18/10/2023 20:30

But I don’t get Pinterest because if I see something I love I can’t then find out more about it. Or am I using it wrong?

I basically find almost all the kitchens I can find dull, dull, dull, and I’ve tried googling things like quirky kitchens, period kitchens etc, but just get companies selling the same old stuff. I really want to find some websites that might spark a bit of joy or excitement but can’t find the right Google terms or hashtags to get me there.

Maybe have a look at properties for sale with The Modern House? They have a lot of interesting properties for sale, some of which I’m sure have interesting kitchens.

SidandAndyssextoy · 18/10/2023 20:42

I’ll have a look. Although I don’t think a modern kitchen in itself would work in my house, but you never know what it might spark. Thank you.

Houzz.co.uk or their app.

millions of images, and good filtering options.

beetr00 · 18/10/2023 20:54

apologies @JetBlackSteed didn't notice you'd mentioned Houzz before my previous post 🙂

No apologies needed @beetr00 😆 Great minds and all that ...

DidntHaveTheLatin · 18/10/2023 20:59

Modern House is a good idea, @nc14..

I know what you mean about shelves, OP! But you can still have cupboards - just non-matching ones 😁

Wotwotwotwotwot · 18/10/2023 21:02

Inigo.com is the period alternative to the Modern House. Lots of lovely kitchens bit a bit light on details

sipsqueak · 18/10/2023 21:04

Architectural Digest's instagram feed is pretty inspiring

Martin83 · 18/10/2023 21:06

I just finished my kitchen with a big island 1200 x 2400. Looks great but it's not very functional. If I was doing it again I would have a more worktop and wall units.

World of Interiors for proper inspiration

@SidandAndyssextoy Not all the houses are actually modern. There’s also Inigo which I think is run by the same people but targets unusual period properties.

We have a period house and didn't want a regular kitchen so we got a carpenter in to custom make one which is great as you can have exactly what you want. I actually look at Rightmove at other people's kitchens for inspiration. Though largely we knew what we wanted and we didn't want something just because it's in fashion atm. But that works with a period home. You can also do custom sizes for things that way. Though my favourite kitchen which inspired ours was a 1950s one in someone else's home that had never been changed and loved the colour and the solid wood. I also found it useful to take photos of ours and there are sites were you can see tiles or flooring on screen if you put a photo in. I didn't use those companies but helped me see what colours would look like.

bravotango · 19/10/2023 09:08

Order the free Devol catalogue! It's usually so beautiful it works as a coffee table book after Grin you'll get lots of period property envy ideas

nbee84 · 19/10/2023 09:13

I follow The Wood Works on instagram. Beautiful kitchens and great for picking up ideas.

Silkiefloof · 19/10/2023 09:25

Ours is only a small kitchen and not complete yet but we went for a carpenter and hand painted units in pale blue and solid oak worktop. You can do anything you like if you get someone like this in. We have a small range cooker but would have had a bigger one in a bigger kitchen.

@SidandAndyssextoy I buy KBB. Kitchens, Bathrooms and Bedrooms magazine. You can buy back copies. It’s the best resource in my view. Lots of ideas and manufacturers.

Budget makes a difference! Martin Moore might suit you. I like Devol but I would go for Neptune I think. Go and have a look at one of their showrooms.

Can you get light into your kitchen? We built an oak conservatory and put the kitchen in that. We have an island and an eating space so it’s quite big. Plus light and great views of the garden. Our previous kitchen was dark and there’s no solution, other than lighting. I much prefer my natural light and space.
