House insurance - suggestions for reasonable premium

No claims ever in 25 years. Premium almost doubled. Comparison sites not bringing in competitive quotes. Nationwide came back with similar to cheapest in comparison sites. Direct line not good. Any suggestions for decent insurers?

I’ve literally just finished sorting out my buildings and contents insurance as my existing providers premium doubled and they had no interest in budging. Have got it for less than half price through Halifax on comparethemarket.com.

I've just gone with More Than for both buildings and contents joint policy. It was £345, and I found it through one of the comparison sites.

My new premium was much less than half the cost of my previous policy with Santander, which cost me £927 (I went with them as I was getting a mortgage for my house through them and it was easier to join it all together; more fool me!).

Might be worth calling a broker. This is a very common occurrence at the moment.

Our renewal came in last month with a 40% uplift. Comparison sites didn't give me the discount I was looking for so I started looking closely at the value of cover. I found that once I reduced the contents cover required to under 100k the prices came down to similar to last years. Basically we were buying more cover than we needed previously. Talking to friends and family renewal premiums are all up massively - inflation related apparently. I'm not convinced the BOE have put up rates enough yet to get inflation back to target in the short term so its best to expect more significant increases next year, on pretty much everything :(

Our home insurance went through the roof this year (c 350 to almost 800). When I asked Churchill they said c£1400! I then spoke to a broker (got some features that mean I can’t use comparison sites) and the cheapest price they found was also c£1400!

So I renewed with my current insurer. We did have a claim (only one in 24 years) and I was blaming that (although it was only for c£500), but then read stories about general insurance price inflation.

Did they say why it has doubled? Ie. have you recently been added to a flood zone or installed a wood burner? Usually it doubles when risk goes up in some way.

Folks, the reason insurance has gone up so much is obviously partly inflation but also rebuild costs have absolutely gone through the roof.

I did two quotes back in May. One for a rental we live in (just so I can get a comparison to the horror below) which is probably worth about 600k. Bog standard brick construction, 11 yo, 2400 sq ft. The rebuild cost the online insurance tools were quoting was 384k. The insurance cost was piddly.

I also actually tried to insure a stone house we were trying to buy. 1800 sq ft, about 130-180 yo. I had to call people because I couldn't believe my eyes. They wanted £1340 which they made clear was not the final number, they needed more details to finalise that. The justification for the high amount was an astronomical rebuild cost of an estimated 1.1 million on a house valued at 465k.

We have never had buildings insurance so I guess that works against us, but I was flabbergasted at the rebuild cost on a stone house.

Outnumbered99 · 16/10/2023 12:51

Another vote for speaking to a broker, but yep, its risen very sharply lately. Rebuild costs are astronomical :-(

cherryassam · 16/10/2023 12:53

Our rebuild cost was also wild this time - stone house, rebuild cost is 3x the value of the house.

LoopyGremlin · 16/10/2023 17:46

My insurance renewal was £200 more than last year at £942. I went on comparethemeerkat and got comparable cover for £600 and can pay monthly at no extra charge so pretty happy!

We're with NFU by far the, best both price wise and service, that we've ever had. Even had a discount on last year.
