Skylights and heat - would you buy it?

We viewed a house yesterday with a huge kitchen /diner extension at the back. It was a lovely space but had four skylights (3 velux /openable type ones and 1 square flat one) and we are worried it would be too hot in summer. If the solutions like skylight covers and films for the glass etc. are effective then I think we'd be willing to try to buy it and retrofit these things. But I'm not sure whether they would make the house good to live in, or just reduce the regret? The back is E/NE facing and the velux windows are on a roof that faces south. Does anyone have experience with this that they can share? Thanks in advance!

I have a massive skylight and I got a company called Windowtreat to retrofit a reflective electric blind. Looks really good and game changer in terms of reflecting heat in the summer/ keeping heat in in winter. They have them on runners so they don’t sag. Otherwise for the smaller ones, if they are actually Velux you can get blinds to fit them. We have 4 in another roof and keep the blinds closed pretty much all the time.

Thanks, reassuring to know that the reflective window blind has worked well for you. I'll take a look at Windowtreat

@Sparehair sorry for another question, just wondering what months of year you find you need to keep the reflective blind shut against heat - eg is it just in the hottest summer, or do you find you also need it from sunny days in spring?

mainly May- Aug and even then not all the time, only when the sun is directly overhead

Thanks so much!

We have south facing skylights and this summer put on some of that reflective film, on the outside. It was a cheap one off Amazon, to try before we committed and even that has made a difference. You can also get specific solar blinds and panels for velum or whatever make or skylight they are. Ours are Fakro and we found blinds no problem.
