Looking at making alcoves in bedrooms into built in wardrobes. Thinking maybe asking a local carpenter. Anyone done this? Prices?

Interested as we are just about to look into this as well. I was going to look at ikea pax and having them built in by our handyman/carpenter

Hi I had this done about 8 years ago. Pricing will depend on how basic you go (I went very basic) for example - I wasn't worried about having the wooden frame go all the way round inside. Just had enough wood at the side to fix doors to etc (this saved a lot in materials cost). I didn't have anything inside other than a shelves and a couple of rails. I then just got boxes from Ikea that I put in the shelves in the single part of the wardrobe. I also painted them myself. I paid about £450 a wardrobe but imagine it's gone up a lot now!

Thanks @Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky I'm thinking king the same, I'm not going to pay for wood all the way round, just frame for doors, shelves etc. Does yours go up to the ceiling?

Yes all the way to ceiling.

I have essentially a double wardrobe in the alcove about 9cm wide by 65 ish deep I think) that goes floor to ceiling. That is floor to ceiling. It has a shelf and separate small doors for the top part. Then a shelf in main part with hanging rail.

I then extended about 35/40 ish cm over the chimney breast and that's shallower (about 35cm) and has lots of shelves and I used the ikea boxes for stuff like pj's bags etc.

90cm wide not 9!

Worth bearing in mind that they can make clothes smell musty and damp if on an outside wall of a detached house. Had some built on either side of a fireplace in a 30's house and everything smelt musty and damp if the doors were kept closed. Think you can get small 'wardrobe heaters' now.

I recommend that you go with basic alcove built-in wardrobes. In my experience, it's cheaper and does the same job.
