New build garden east facing

Theres a corner plot where the garden is 10x10m, it’s east facing, with the corner wall on the left, the house garage built on the right side and the side of a house along the back. So it’s all very private. I wondered if the house along the back would mean the sun would be more blocked?

Yes sounds quite shaded though I'm not sure what corner wall is - is it the end of the row of houses so could be lowered to let evening sun in?

Can you draw a diagram? We have a corner plot with a wraparound garden facing east and north. We get lots of sun and some much welcome shade too.

The house at the eastern end would block your morning sun. If you mean that you have a wall in the garden on the south facing side, that would cast a shadow. The garage wouldn't affect you if it's to the north and your house would prevent evening sun from the west, if I've understood you. I've just bought a new build and have avoided east facing gardens. Mine is west and very sunny as the aspect to the south isn't blocked.

sorry if I wasn’t clear. Image attached. Large orange is the house, opposite is the neighbours, then there’d the garage and wall. I’m considering reserving it because the house itself is nice and there’s a lot of playgrounds around the estate for the kids but wanted to at least have some sun and a garden?

My garden is orientated in a very similar way. North east facing with another house just behind my back fence. The sun rises where your diagram says 173, and sets going over to the opposite bottom left hand side of your house in your diagram (hope that makes sense). Because it rises and sets on the diagonal we get plenty of sun and also shade. Sun nearer the house in the morning , and at end of the garden in the evening. But my garden is a little larger than yours . DS and DIL have a garden that’s full north and have a 3 storey town house, plus a 2 storey house at the end of their garden. Theirs is about 7m wide x 15m long they still get plenty of sun. If it was full east I’d imagine it would get the least sun as the house at the back would block morning sun until it rose above the neighbours house, and then shade from your house as it disappeared over that. Any garden facing north will get less sun in the winter than a south facing garden, but would you be using it much at that time of year?

Use this :

Don't worry about the default lat/long, it is not where I live !

You can draw on the surrounding buildings on google map and enter their height then see the shadows they cast at different times.

It works for my garden when I have tested it.

Re the NE facing garden you have, IMO the house and garage will cast shadows over the garden depending on how high they are.

The lower half (towards the garage) will probably not get much sun, you will get most sun in the quadrant to the top left of your diagram. I think it would be a difficult garden to grow grass on in the bottom half.

I would not say that it would be a good garden for sun. A lot of people say only south facing gardens are good, but this is wrong. It depends also a lot on the surrounding structures, where they are placed and their height, and how far the garden is away from them.

Interested how long is shadow on your land/garden?

Try online application to show sun shadow on google maps.

Thank you! I think it’s best I get artificial grass.
