Which trade to install a washing machine in a new location? (Gas? Plumber? Builder?)

We're putting the washing machine in a new room, which means it needs to be connected to the boiler, a drainage hole for the waste pipe needs to be drilled through the wall etc. Who would do this? I was thinking plumber but DH said it needs to be a gas engineer due to the boiler. Thank you.

Does it need to be connected to a boiler? Our washing machine - and most I thought - is a cold water feed only. So a plumber is fine.

Plumber - mine is cold water feed, but even if they are hot water, its a plumber to tap into the hot water supply

DarKm · 12/10/2023 12:16

Oh good question - I thought anything to do with water pipes had to be connected to the boiler??

Ah okay! As you can tell, we have very little knowledge of DIY stuff! Thank you both!

Unlikely it needs to be connected to the boiler. It’ll be a plumber or general handyman job.

TakeMe2Insanity · 12/10/2023 12:19

Most gas engineers are also plumbers.
Not all plumbers are accredited gas engineers.

If you are interfering with the boiler then you need an accredited gas engineer. If you aren’t then a standard plumber.

They normally need connecting to the electrical supply, there needs to be a cold water feed and there needs to be a waste water outlet. You may need a large vent for a tumble drier.

I have never seen a boiler powered washing machine, unless it is about 75 years old or something. I would guess a plumber would be best as if you don't have a cold water feed in the room it is going into you will need pipe extensions. Could be quite pricey because of this.

smithy153 · 12/10/2023 12:23

You need an electric socket, cold water feed and a 40mm drain pipe. No boiler required! Plumber can do it if electrics are in place.

Silkiebunny · 12/10/2023 12:27

Plumber, if electrics are needed too then generally call someone in for that.

Helenahandkart · 12/10/2023 12:29

Plumber. They’ll need to run a cold water pipe to it. The boiler is irrelevant.

Notyetthere · 12/10/2023 12:52

All above are correct. The washing machine heats water itself to the required temperature. It just needs a cold water feed.

See, this is the type of thing I need to learn!

Do you have electricity, water and also a waste pipe to where you want to move it? The electricity and water can be fixed but the waste pipe can be trickier to fix. Depends how much you want to spend on moving it. Could be costly.

DarKm · 12/10/2023 13:40

Electricity and water yes. Not sure what you mean by a waste pipe already being there - there is a drain it can go to outside but a hole needs to be made through the brick wall?
