When did this stop being a thing? (Kitchens)

So we are looking at replacing our tired 1960s fitted kitchen. It's very robust but, frankly, could just do with dragging into the 21st century.

I've realised that, at some point, drawers above kitchen base cabinets (as in, between the cabinet and the worktop) seem to have disappeared from modern kitchen design entirely.

I hadn't really thought about it, but I've since realised that I hadn't seen it in a kitchen for YEARS until we bought this house.

So... when did they fall out of fashion? 😂

I designed our kitchen, fitted last year. It has nine drawers. Get the kitchen you want!

@toomanyboxes my drawers all have sides, even the bottom ones. In my case it is glass on the sides

I wish mine did. We had the kitchen done about 3 years ago, I might go back and ask them if they have drawer sides.

Other than under the sink all I have is drawers - oh the corner unit is one of those pull out ones to get the deep bit out too, I keep spices, rice and baking ingredients in there - but the rest are drawers as PP says - shallow ones at top (my cutlery drawer is also 90cm wide) then two deeper drawers underneath for dinnerware and pots and pans. The top cupboards are for dry food (cereal, pasta), another for things like sauces and jams/chutneys/oils/stock cubes, and one for cups and glassware. I also have a larder cupboard that houses the toaster, coffee maker, treats like chips and biscuits, all the table linen, and the drawers underneath special occasion china.

@toomanyboxes - you should be able to get them. When we did our kitchen about 18 months ago, we could choose metal rails, glass, wood, etc sides. All compatible

I have just put in a new kitchen and I only have 2 cupboards - one tall one for all my applicances and a small one above the oven/microwave unit. Otherwise we have pan drawers everywhere. Most of these have one or two narrower internal drawers with glass sides. I absolutely love it. I also have two more tall units - one has a larder unit and the other has internal drawers which I use for baking ingredients, glasses and ovenware. From Ikea so not massively expensive

Excellent, thank you. Don't know why it wasn't thought of by the kitchen designer at the time, they did all of it for us.

DIY Kitchens still do the traditional one drawer over a cupboard under the worktop i wanted these on one section of my kitchen and yes those units were more expensive than the straightforward cupboards but they were what i wanted

sorry best pic i have but where handles going across is the drawer bit

Caspianberg · 13/10/2023 15:09

Actually even our bins ( recycling system of 4) are all in a large drawer also

CasperGutman · 13/10/2023 15:14

Surely every kitchen suppler does drawer-line units (which is the term you need to look for, OP)? I didn't think there was anything special about DIY Kitchens in this regard, though they do have a great range of them, in a wide range of widths as well as in reduced depth cabinets etc.
