Hi all.

I recently bought a flat, first time buyer. The ceiling is intact, all fine visually and nothing flagged in home report. However it has artex swirly design and I would like a flat and smooth ceiling.

What’s the best way to achieve this? I’m a young person so never had any experience in this but from research and speaking to tradesmen, there are 2 ways of doing it.

  1. Skim it i.e. plaster over it
  2. attach a plasterboard

I try to find out the pros and cons for each approach but couldn’t find any. anyone here know?

Also my flat is quite small, living room and bedroom and hall is only about 29 sq meter. I wonder how much it will cost?

It is more for cosmetic purposes, nothing wrong with the ceiling at all.

thanks!

Our plasterers' advice with artex, skim it, but they were talking about ceilings they had seen so they knew ]how deep the swirls on the artex were, yours may be different. If it has asbestos in it (some artex can have) it won't be disturbed.

We have a very old lath and plaster ceiling or two here, with textured paper on it. When I asked our (very good) plasterer about it, he said he'd prefer to cover it and skim it rather than take it down, screwing the plasterboard through the laths and into the joists. As it is, it has coving I'd like to preserve it and it only sags a teeny bit in a couple of very small areas, so for now, though I dont; like the textured paper, I'm painting it and keeping fingers crossed. But I won't take the paper off, as I think it may be holding the ceiling up.....😬

Have a look at the magic levelling kit “Toupret Plasterer's kit”
