Ideas for sad, clinical, bare bedroom

nc for this. Need ideas to inject warmth and colour into our bedroom. In desperate need of a cosy sanctuary to retreat to rather than a clinical lab!!!

Bed is the only thing that must stay. We need paint/wallpaper, new curtains and bedding, plus all finishing touches eg pictures, lamps, rug etc.

We have 6 drawer ikea Malm - I’ve included photos of it at diff ends of room. We need a new (mirrored) wardrobe. There’s obv not enough room for two pieces of bulky furniture - so either the Malm or new wardrobe will go in the spare room. Dressing table can also be moved to spare room if needed.

there is a tiny ensuite too which needs a privacy door/screen too.

please help!

Big mirror above the drawers to reflect the light from the window.
Fluffy rug to cover the big area at the bottom of the bed. Co ordinate with some rich coloured heavy curtains. Satin or crushed velvet effect would feel a bit luxurious. High thread count cotton bedding feels nice.

A few plants to add a touch of fresh green. Keep the walls neutral so you can use lighter coloured bedding & curtains for the summer months.

Do you like deep purple? Burgundy? Both would add a feeling of warmth.

Oh thank you for those ideas. Keep the Malm on the wall opposite the window then?

What colour walls do you suggest?

Paint the ceiling, any colour you fancy, but paint the ceiling. Then have your curtains and bedding in that and contrasting colours. Leave everything else neutral.

Big green bushy plants help most situations. You can brighted with different coloured pots to match your new decor, or get some natural style wicker ones to keep things a calm sanctuary.

Also depending on what style you end up with, some rustic shelves with brackets different size photos etc (and more plants) help soften things. I got mine from https://bensimpsonfurniture.com/

If you find a neutral colour you like, you can easily change the look with bedding & curtains. It looks like a lovely light room with a big window & sparkly downlights.
Yes I would leave the drawers where they are & put a mirror above.

Is a wallpaper like this behind the headboard a good or very bad idea? I’m hopeless at this!

Your headboard is grey so that may not quite go. Nothing wrong with wallpaper behind the headboard as a feature wall.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 10/10/2023 20:38

This is more neutral. Wouldn't clash with headboard or furniture.

Get the en suite door to match with your bedroom door.

Find a few nice prints or framed photos to break up the expanse of walls. But remember you want calm, a sanctuary to relax in. Don't clutter.

Yes I like that wallpaper better, it’s calmer. Would you go white curtains with it?

I’d never heard of a coloured ceiling! That’s brave!

No. White curtains would get grubby pretty quick. You could go pale grey/silver for summer. The rug I pictured before comes in an ombre silver grey.

Here you go.

I would add texture like a chunky throw at the end of the bed, a rug then some pictures/plants/accessories

Mine is the much hated grey but I find it so calming

I had a wedgewood blue ceiling with rich cream walls for years and loved it. So calming to lie in bed and look at.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 10/10/2023 20:47

An alternative would be deep forest green curtains & bedding with brilliant white walls. It would go with the grey/white wallpaper & grey rug.

bedroomdecorideas · 10/10/2023 20:48

Hmm yes I’m never sure if I like the grey look or not so curtains and rug also in grey feel cold again. My head and heart are in need of warmth! 💕

I did my bedroom earlier this year. For winter I've got aubergine crushed velvet eyelet curtains on a chrome pole & plum self stripe egyptian cotton bedding. Walls are magnolia & carpet slate grey. I'm about to order the grey fluffy rug.

EmmaStone · 10/10/2023 20:55

There's a lot of neutral in the room, would you consider some bold colours, maybe for curtains, a rug, some artwork for the walls? Also the corner with the ?laundry basket looks a bit sad, I could see a large floor length decorative mirror in that corner?

CoffeeBeansGalore · 10/10/2023 20:55

I may go pale pink for spring & surprise Dh 🤣

Shadyboots23 · 10/10/2023 20:56

If you keep the walls neutral you could change it without too much expense by having different bedding etc
Like a lighter texture/colour for summer and go deep and warm for winter
Any colours you love? I would start there

MargotBamborough · 10/10/2023 21:01

I don't really like the spotlights in the ceiling. I'd get some nice lamps and not use the ceiling lights.

Our bedroom is dusky pink and our bed linen alternates between plain white and dark pink/grey. I'd have a look at bedrooms on Pinterest and identify a colour palette you like and then copy that.

Put a shelf up above the bed with a few books on and have a plant or two for some greenery.

bedroomdecorideas · 10/10/2023 21:01

Colour wise I’m open to anything - just not the ‘landlord white’ soulless colour that’s currently on them.

Look online, there's lots of inspiration for painted ceilings, it looks beautiful!

bedroomdecorideas · 10/10/2023 21:03

I suppose I need to decide whether a wardrobe and Malm dresser will fit in the room, or just one or the other.

Start by picking a piece of artwork that you like. it could be a painting from ArtFinder.com or a big poster from the Tate Gallery website or a set of 3 pictures taken from an arty calendar and put in IKEA frames. But pick something you enjoy looking at and that makes you smile.

then that picture can define the colours you use elsewhere. Pick 2 or 3 colours from the picture and use those to choose some rugs (bedside rugs as well as one at the end) and curtains and a new duvet etc. Pick another colour related to the painting for your walls, after you've got curtains etc.

I'd have big wardrobes in the space at the end of the bed (not mirrored) to maximise storage and then the Malm drawers can stay too.

And lamps with big colourful lampshades on the bedside tables (I'd get bigger tables) too.
