Advice on Wokingham (relocating from London). Please help!

Hi, I'm thinking of moving to Wokingham (with partner and 18month old), but having doubts due to the following... please advise on your experience of these as I don't know much about the area:

  • we have viewed a house on Langborough road but I have since seen so many complaints on the Wokingham FB group about traffic/gridlock down this road. Is this still the case (the comments are a few years old now)? Are there sirens/ambulances driving down this road as I believe it could be the fastest route to the hospital?? Concerned about road noise from main bedroom.
  • how is the traffic in Wokingham in general - is this an issue?
  • nurseries/childminders, there seems to be a lack of nurseries and childminders in Wokingham. Is this the case? The nearest one to the house is Wokingham Day Nursery - which doesn't have amazing reviews. What are people experiences with this nursery? It currently has a waiting list so a bit worried about childcare situation until we can get a place sorted at a nursery as there doesn't seem to be loads of childminders
  • is Wokingham a good place to live for young families? We are hoping to meet people with young children in the area, for play dates etc. Are there many families near this area of Wokingham and around Langborough Rec? Also same question in general. Is it generally a friendly area/easy to meet people?

Thanks in advance! ☺️

No idea about traffic these days, but there used to be an amazing kebab shop.

Lots of colleagues and friends with families in Wokingham (work on the edge of Reading.) Woosehill seems popular.

Not sure about traffic (it's usually been after the last train that I've given lifts back,) but traffic round Reading and surrounding towns is often grim at rush hour.

I have had some good nights out there, though.

Wokingham traffic is generally bad at peak times and the Langborough (and Murdoch) Road is one of the rat runs for people going to Bracknell.

Having said that Wokingham is one of the nicer small towns in the area.

Thanks so much for your replies. Would you say I'd be able to drive down Langborough road at peak times or would there be a queue of traffic to wait in on that road? Thanks

Maybe put your proposed route into Google maps at different times of day a few times, including your prposed commute time, and see how the estimated journey time changes?

That's a good idea! Thanks I'll do that 👌

I live in Wokingham, and yes Langborough Road is notorious for bad traffic. No idea if the new Southern Distribution Road will make any difference. I am not aware of ambulances using that route as there are always cars parked on the road as well as the bollards up towards Murdoch Road being an absolute pain to get through.

Are you set on Langborough Road? It is very central, yes but where we are it is a 15 minute walk into the centre of town without the traffic issue.

In answer to some of your other questions, traffic in Wokingham really does depend on the time of day, where you're going etc., so for example, we live in North Wokingham, near Cantley Park - we wouldn't dream of attempting to cross the Railway Line at Easthampstead/Finchampstead Roads during rush hour/peak times because of the traffic; also Reading Road if they're digging it up can be a bit of a nightmare.

Childcare - our son goes to Muddy Ducks Nursery, which is based at Dinton Pastures; the childcare offering in Wokingham really does depend what you're looking for: full time/4 days/term time only etc., the Council website has a list of registered childminders - it's worth going to the individual childminders directly as they don't update the website with availability regularly. There aren't many nurseries in the centre of town due to space, so you might need to be willing to travel.

I think Wokingham is a great place to bring up families - the council have been redeveloping a lot of the play parks - Elms Field, Cantley, and the country parks (Dinton and California) are all great spaces for kids to run around and blow off steam. The leisure centre is also relatively new - there's a splash pad next to the training pool, and they run active bounce sessions (equivalent of soft play) regularly. There's also Pirate's Landing for soft play, which is really good -nice and airy, and they do deep cleans every week.

Happy to answer more questions - either on here or DM.

Also think Wokingham is a great place to live, we moved out for a larger property and returned often. Think every local FB group harps on about how much busier/more traffic there is. Having said that but Langborouugh Road is busy eg 8.30-9.15 and Peak weekend shopping weekends but it's a main road to a market town so to be expected really
