Help solve the mystery in my bedroom?

Every time either myself or my husband to go into our bedroom, we immediately start coughing, sneezing, and wrinkling our noses. We can smell dust all the time. I dust our window shutters, bedside tables and furniture twice a week and we hoover once – twice a week. Our vacuum bag is new. I’ve changed the filter. I’ve put a HEPA air purifier in the room. We even had a dustmites guy come out and vacuum and treats our mattress and pillows. Most nights we can’t fall asleep for the itchy noses and wheezing. There are no plants in the room and we don’t sleep with pets in the bedroom.

The only thing I can think is that we have an upholstered bed which is fabric pulled over a hollow frame. But couldn’t really be this?! I also use the special furniture tool a couple of times a month to vacuum the headboard and side bits.

Help! It’s the only room in the house in which we have this strange experience.

Could the atmosphere actually be too dry?
Can you put a bowl of water near any heat source to 'dampen' the air to see if that helps?

Brick dust?

Dust ghost?

Do you have a wool carpet or rug in that room, and not in other rooms?

NotToYou · 06/10/2023 21:30

I would get a couple of plants for the room and open the windows wide for a couple of hours at least each day and see if that made a difference. Then possibly try a humidifier.

Oh I didn’t think of dryness. Yes I could try that - and thanks to the other person for the plant suggestion too

Yes! Our carpet is different and the others that come off the landing are mostly poly mix. Our bedroom carpet is 70% wool. Dare I ask what this means…?

Do you damp dust, or just flap the dust around with a dry duster ?
you need a damp microfibres cloth to actually remove dust from a room

Misstabithabean · 06/10/2023 21:52

We get this too, although we can't smell dust! We have a 100% wool carpet and put it down to this. It's got better as the carpet has got older but when it was quite new, it used to make us cough every night!

My son was like that when I had further pillows. They only had to be in the same room with him and he would react like that. Is there any chance there's anything with feathers in the room?

Wool is a common allergen, and any airborne dust in the bedroom will contain wool fibres. You can have a respiratory reaction to dust from wool carpets even if you can happily wear a wool jumper, because there is more dust from it and it’s going straight to your respiratory system.

Well I did not know this!

Yes but I’ve always had feather pillows. We wash them and dry them regularly. Hmmm

It means you can never be a sheep farmer. All those cute little frolicking lambs...🐏
