What to treat an oak shelf with to make it waterproof?

I've got a lovely oak shelf that I'd like to fit in my bathroom- it will be near the basin so will definitely get wet from time to time. Could anyone advise what I could treat it with to make it waterproof? I'd like to see the grain in the wood, so didn't particularly want to paint it. However, I had wooden worktops in a previous kitchen which were just treated with Osmo oil; whilst this helped a bit the worktops still developed watermarks over time. Surely there must be a product out there that will make it absolutely bomb proof! Any recommendations gratefully received.

Polyurethane varnish, several coats and it will be bomb proof. Some even resist boiling water. Come in gloss, satin or matt finish. Cheap is not better, the more expensive ones are tougher. Hope that helps.

We have used those varnishes on boats, sun and salt water. Will be very good for your purposes.
