Ancient gas meter

We gave an ancient gas meter which is huge ugly and difficult to read. It is also in the downstairs loo which badly needs updating but this meter restricts what we can do.
I got in touch with our gas supplier to see if it could be removed but no they would only supply a digital meter and leave the old one there.
Does anyone know who I need to contact to get it removed?

We requested the gas meter be updated on a property last year and they replaced the old one with a new one in the same location. That was with the supplier British Gas.

@orangelotus Do you mean relocated? Is it inside but on an outside wall? Could it move to the other side of this wall? Or is it in the middle of the house? They can of course be moved but it will cost you because it has to be done by the gas supplier as they disconnect if from the mains gas. I have recently had both my meters changed and updated but they were already outside and they called me to change them as they were put in when the house was built 25 years ago.

You need to ask for a quote for it to be moved and then an engineer will do a site visit and discuss where they can move it to.

If you want a meter moved you need to contact your network operator AND your supplier, as both need to be involved and the work needs to be done on the same day.

The network operator will disconnect the supply and relocate the cables/pipework, then your supplier needs to install the new meter before the supply can be reconnected.

We recently got a quote to have our electricity meter moved from it’s internal location in our hall, directly through the wall to a surface mounted cupboard and have been told to expect moving the connection to take half a day then another couple of hours for the supplier to fit the meter before the supply is reconnected, so essentially power off for one working day. For reference, although electric not gas and we are having a fuse upgrade as well to future proof for an EV the quote was £1750.

WiltingWallfower · 05/10/2023 22:07

Oh and despite our supplier insisting we need a digital meter, the network operator said we can insist the reconnect our old meter in the new external box and do not have to accept a smart meter if we don’t want one.

We had our meter moved from inside our garage to outside as we had converted it to living space. The distance was only about 1m, but there was a safety issue involved too.

It had to be arranged through the main operator, the same company that you call if you smell gas, and the info was on their website. They had to do a site visit and quote for the work. It was over £800 (!) and all carried out in one day.

Our meter is pretty old too, but they didn't replace it, just moved it.

Ok Thankyou for this information. We are with shell and they have put me in touch with a company they deal with but despite me explaining to the woman arranging the change I really don't think she understood because it all seems to good and easy to be true plus no cost which I doubt is right.

I'll go back and investigate further now I've had your advice

I moved mine from inside to outside. Cadent came and surveyed and then did all the work, cost about £800. They were really efficient and helpful (better than UK Power Network, who moved my electric meter.

I agree that the person you spoke with doesn't understand and are probably passing you on to their smart meter installers. We are with Shell too as our supplier, but moving the meter was dealt with by our network operator, Wales and West.

InTheRainOnATrain · 10/10/2023 14:00

Same situation here and we got it swapped to a smart meter, that doesn’t actually work as it’s too far from the electricity meter (a whole other saga), but it’s half the size of the old one and it was all free and easy to arrange as they’re so desperate to install the smart meters. So then we were able to build a cupboard around it and put the sink on top. Maybe not the perfect solution but no extra money or hassle and we were still able to refurb the downstairs loo as we wanted
