Is there a better way to use this bedroom?

We have a very large master bedroom.

Great, you might think, but it's a really awkward layout. I have attached the floorplan - the green is where the radiators are.

Currently we have loads of excess floorspace but not that much useable space between the bay window and the radiators.

The two things I was wondering about were whether there was a way to partition the room to make a small home office - I currently have a small corner desk by the small window - or whether there was a way to do some kind of partition to make a walk in wardrobe. But the stairs up to the loft conversion make that tricky I think.

Any bright ideas welcome!

Have you looked into getting the radiator on the main wall moved? Depending on your system it can be quite easy.

In principle, we could but I can't figure out where it would go? Because it's a big room and a Victorian house, we do need two radiators I think

Surely you'd just put up a plasterboard wall running from the door to the window, creating a room around 6 x 9 ft - purple (you'd lose 3 ft to a lobby area - red). Use as either study or dressing room or single bedroom.

We have a similar sized room and only have the one radiator under the bay window. If the loft space is insulated it shouldn't need two rads.

Floor plan of ours below.

I like this. The only thing is that I am not sure whether there would be much space for wardrobes if we went for a study (which would sort of be my preference) but I think it could work if we went for a dressing room/walk in wardrobe

Ok, so I've gone with rads under the bay (with a dressing table, why not?)

I've added in a stud wall with a little vestibule area off the landing so that the office can be accessed without going through the bedroom. I forgot to mark a radiator in that room - I'd go for a small one under the window.

You've got almost 4m of wardrobe in the bedroom in a nice tidy run. You could add more on the wall opposite the bed if you felt so inclined.

Green circles are plants (real or artificial) because no room is complete without them!

Thank you! It's really helpful to see it sketched out like this.

It makes for a small study but I think that's fine, my WFH space is currently even smaller really and I think it does increase the useful space for storage. I think some storage could be squeezed into the lobby too

You could take the pp's (lovely!) floor plan but have a shorter width of wardrobes so the door to the bedroom can open a foot or so closer to the hall, which would mean the lobby area was shorter, and give you an extra foot of study length.

Stephisaur · 03/10/2023 11:35

@arintingly you're welcome! I do this for my own house (although in far more detail with mood boards and all sorts 😂)

I do find plonking shapes for furniture helps.

Definitely room for storage in the lobby area - something built in would look nice and purposeful :)

You could do this for a living!

I was pondering built in shoe storage for the lobby bit as our my shoes are all over the place currently

On a similar vein, I was slightly pondering if I could get away with just a door from the hall to the lobby and not bother with bedroom and study doors but I think, if nothing else, it would be better for resale value to have them there

@arintingly Haha thanks.

Shoe storage sounds like a good shout :) my shoes are chaotic too!

Pinkyandperky011 · 03/10/2023 17:32

@arintingly We've got exactly this layout except there is already a wall to split into a small bedroom. The smaller room is used as a bedroom with a loft bed and desk underneath at the moment but hoping to re-arrange soon. I have long wardrobes across the whole of the outside wall in the main room with lots of shoe storage, a desk in the bay window with a rounded radiator and super king sized bed against the wall which joins with the other room. We use the space on the landing for drying racks.
If it's not too cheeky, are you able to post the other side of your floorplan as we are having a nightmare with working out what to do with our bathroom and I've noticed you have a separate toilet and sink which seems like a really good idea. Also happy to send our floorplan if it helps.

arintingly · 03/10/2023 17:37

@Pinkyandperky011 I would love to see your floor plan!

Attached is the other half of our first floor. I think ours is basically the original configuration plus a toilet in the main bathroom.

It is quite compact but I am not a fan of the huge bathrooms that are currently in style, I would rather have my bathroom as small as will keep it functional.

That is so helpful, thanks so much for sharing that. We need a way to split our bathroom as it's huge and unnecessary and while my son is ok in the box room for now, he's 14 so will outgrow it soon. It's also a waste of space.

@arintingly It looks as though your rooms are bigger than ours so that's possibly how you've managed to fit so much in to the space but definitely food for thought so thanks again and I hope you get yours sorted!
