Peninsula or not?

We are starting to think about doing up our kitchen. It’s currently a very small kitchen diner. We want to turn the entire room into a kitchen and reconfigure the rest of our downstairs.

I found this picture of another thread, and it is almost exactly as I imagine our kitchen. Same size, with full length units on that wall and window in the same place.

We are both unsure if we want a peninsula or not. I like the idea of a bit more storage and prep space. And also to separate the space from the rest of downstairs. We probably wouldn’t use it as a breakfast bar as in the picture.

Does anyone have a peninsula? Would you recommend it?

I have a similar kitchen to this, I don’t have the stools and have a high bit where the stools are which is good for hiding messy stuff behind when we eat.

It’s very similar to this.

We have one. It does give extra worktop space which is useful, but there’s two downsides. Firstly, if you have a wall cupboard above the peninsula it can make it hard to reach (we have one and you either have to reach up on tiptoes to open it, or go round the other side of the peninsula but then the cupboard door opens the wrong way so you’re having to peer round the door to get what you want). Secondly, you will probably end up with a big ground level corner cupboard with lots of space but really hard to get into due to it being on the corner, so either wasted space or having to spend money on some expensive solution like rotating shelves.

When we get the kitchen redone I want to ditch the peninsula and just get an island so there’s easy access all round.

Oh and we don’t use ours as a breakfast bar either, where the chairs would go has got bookcases in for all my cookery books.

We are having a new kitchen with a peninsula fitted once our extension is finished. We are going to use as a breakfast bar with stools as we have our dinning table a few feet away. Putting extra cupboards in instead.

Also we wanted to define and separate the area hence peninsula as it’s a large open plan kitchen, dinning area and snug.

Thanks for the input everyone! There won’t be a cupboard above the peninsula because it would block light from the window. But another corner cupboard is something to think about, if we want one or not. I’m already so undecided over the opposite corner and what to do about it! I wouldn’t want shelves there because I know they will get cluttered with stuff. I’d rather have a door to close 😆

We did this on our peninsula so we didn't lose cupboard space. Had a cupboard that was accessed from the other side. Was really good extra storage.

@strawberry2017 that’s the perfect solution! Thanks!

We had a peninsula but the fridge was at the ‘pinch point’, so whenever the full height fridge was open you couldn’t get through. That pinch point was a real pain. We’ve got an island now.
